We just got a Gsp and would like her to duck hunt. She is pretty smart and has a lot of energy. How would y’all suggest as far as training goes

Spoiled dog.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

There is a lot that goes into it, depending on the level of retriever you desire. For a beginner following an established and well respected program is a good starting place. Finding an experienced mentor that turns out nice dogs is the best place for you to start. Some things that need to happen regardless are:(I’m sure I will leave some important stuff out)
Introduction to birds
Introduction to water
Introduction to gunfire
Stoke the retrieving desire
Learn to read your dog
Solid general obedience to include steadiness
Acceptable handling of birds to include delivering to hand

After that you need to decide what level of work you expect from the dog. That is a crossroads where you determine if a trained retrieve suits you and the dog or do you want a force fetched dog with a much broader skill set.
Drills to establish range
Drills to mark multiple birds down
Drills to teach it to mark off the gun
You are going to need at minimum the ability to send the dog on simple blinds to retrieve birds that are not marked down and you can not and do not want to walk to.
Teach a hunt it up command
Handling, if you want the dog to do more difficult blinds or to send it for cripples first.
It is a process that needs to follow a logical progression. That is where the mentor and an established program come in.

One other point to consider is the continental breeds, including the GSP, while likely physically tougher in the field than the retriever breeds, and more athletic, do not have the same mental toughness to stand up to the same level of correction. The established retriever programs were developed to train labs for trials. Training your GSP needs to reflect that by modifying the program to manage that. The continental breeds also do not do as well with repetition as the retrievers. If you have a well bred dog with a strong natural retrieve and a love of birds, tapping into its desire will get you through a lot.

If you don’t have a firm grasp on the things I have typed, following a program will be difficult without a mentor.
If you were closer I would offer some hands on guidance. Maybe one of the members from up around the DFW area will offer to train some with you...

All the best to you and your GSP. You own what you condone.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE
