My neighbor has cut my hay last couple of years, about 35-40 acres all in. Last year we had terrible moisture in the late winter and spring so he only got 63 round bales off the place. This year after cutting 14 +/- acres, he got 64 bales, with at least another 20 acres to cut. Looking to be a fine year for cattle hay.

Looking to be quite a [censored] year for hay in NE Texas.
It was too wet for too long and most fields didn't get sprayed or fertilized. It was then too wet too long to get a decent first cut (forage was too tall, weeds). I'm sure there's plenty of junk being baled right now, but not much quality hay in my neck of the woods - or from anyone I know. If the rain doesn't turn back on a little bit - going to be a weird year for hay.

We got a record 86 big bales last year on the first cutting. It's ready to cut now and finally dry enough.

Seems all the farmers around here that have grown hay for resale in the past all planted winter wheat and corn. Corn everywhere this year with the high prices.

My brother is having his place cut too, though he's going to keep it for his cows I believe.

Hell, my old horse will eat it if he gets hungry enough! lmao I should have laid my grass down the end of last week but just too much going on here at work through tomorrow. I hope the weather forecast holds through the weekend and if so I will lay mine down Thursday and hopefully roll it up Saturday.

Never really understood this business. When you can get high prices, you can't grow it. When you can grow a lot of it, prices are low.

Yup Hud A really good 500 lb black steer calf might get you $700 today but yet feed is as high as it's ever been. I've never understood how when feed is high cattle are low. smdh Ridiculous that 5-6 years ago that same calf brought $1200+. How is it that beef is every bit as high in the grocery store right now as when that calf was bringing 70%-75% more to the farmer?

Usually looking at second cutting by now. With all the rain, still can’t put a tractor in the field for first cutting. If I didn’t get stuck, would rut up my pasture. Have seen no hay cut in my area.

What second cutting. I've not gotten one the last 2 years with the bad drought we experienced. Probably why you won't ever see me complaining about 'too much rain'. lol

Lots of equipment running up and down the road trying to catch up now. Feast or famine.

Our pasture grass has grown so much this year the renter won't be buying much hay. He usually has rows of round bales on the adjoining place, there was none the last time we were there.

We don't fertilize anymore , we plant what excels in the time of year and conditions. Between that and not tilling or discing anymore,( we bought three drills). We are saving a s ton of $. Our winter cover crops require zero fertilizing and its over the calves backs into May. I think majority of the industry still does it like " my paw " did. Which is great for memories but no ranch can stay stagnant
