My brother has been having some issues with his tractor he has had some junk, i believe algae in the fuel tank in the past that fuel filter changes have cleared up. I wanted to drain and clean the tank the last time but he didnt want to mess with it since it was running better. Anyhow here we are again and it starving for fuel even after the fuel filter/water separator has been changed. I think the in tank screen/filter is probably blocked with junk, it is on the end of a valve with a barb fitting that feeds the fuel pump/engine. I was thinking about taking the in tank screen off and leaving it off and replacing with an inline see through filter spliced into the fuel line outside of the tank so it can be visibly inspected easily.
I have a mild concern of it being a point that is easy to break there driving over brush etc. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

^ this, or you just gonna clog-up the (unnecessary) external filter you add on- and add more points to leak. I put it in my holding/storage cans too.

Yes the plan this time is to drain and clean tank. We will treat the fuel also. But thinking of relocating the screen/filter to outside the tank.

Think im going to give it a whirl. I have one like pictured above i can put on, and will see what I can do about finding a potentially higher quality one. Not a big fan of the plastic one I have but it was good enough for my old riding mower.
I also dont know if the in tank screen is part of the shut off valve or not and im not interested in seeing what deere wants for one of them lol

Of all the posts I've read about how cheap you claimed to be.... this is what you want

Drain the fuel and unscrew the shutoff valve off the tank. When you unscrew the shutoff valve I bet there is the screen attached to that valve as a assembly.

Hehe Im not sure if cheap is the right word or not. I probably spend more $ time and effort on preventative maintenance than most people, I just dont have an affinity for things that shine.

Top off your tank at the end of the day.
Our Mahindra 5555 had an internal screen in the tank about the size of half a cigarette. It would clog up and collapse. Under warranty, they changed out the fuel tank. Dealership service technician said get rid of the internal screen and put in a clear inline filter that we could see, which we did.
The filter had a paper element which worked well but the filter would collapse when a bit of crud clogged the needle valve in the tank. Got tired of pulling the needle valve and took it back to the dealer, out of warranty. It was time for major service and I just didn't want to mess with it.
Dealer flushed the tank out and changed the inline filter to a clear inline screen that can be dumped out and reused. Most importantly, he emphasized that we needed to top off the tank after we ran the tractor to prevent condensation and crud build up. That was something we were not doing. We used it irregularly and briefly and allowed it to sit for long intervals without topping off.
Moral to the story. Top off your tank after a day's work.
