Sadly I have to move my 64 gun safe (safeproof) to the garage. I'm looking for advice on those Who have theirs in the garage as well on what works

I already have a small heating rod to help with the humidity. That is my biggest concern is the humidity getting in and rusting. What else and or other suggestions/items does everyone suggest.

Thanks for the help!

Temperature control would be my concern. Big fluctuations in heat and cold will cause moisture and induce rust.

I’ve got 3 in the garage, I keep the rechargeable humidity packs in them and a gauge that tells me the temp and current humidity plus the highest it has been. No issues, but I also oil the guns yearly.

Pappybear hit it on the head. I had mine out there for a few months as we worked on our house and I had rust on some guns. I'm in north Houston but I would be carful. I quickly moved it inside.....

This. And adding what Pig listed will be good too.

I have 5 safes in my garage and I keep a couple of dehumidifiers in each. With proper lube on the metal, they seem to do just fine. I pick up the dehumidifiers at the Dollar Tree store for a buck apiece, so it's not a big deal

My biggest issue would be the accessibility of the safe to a thief. In the garage you can back right up to it and pull it over. Different story inside the house. I have engine blocks oiled down and in sealed bags rust in the garage.

In addition to moisture, the effect of wide temperature changes on wood stocks would seem to be a concern.

"According to the NRA, 50% humidity at 70 degrees is considered ideal "Arms Museum" storage conditions. Any dryer and you can have problems with wood stocks drying out and shrinking or cracking. Rust is unlikely to form below 65% humidity unless salt is present, so that would be the upper limit. Actually, if you don't have wide daily temperature swings in your house to cause condensation on the metal, whatever the humidity is, is probably just fine."

Throw some oil on them every now and then and they will be fine. I can’t tell the difference between garage and in the house.

Thanks, Billy

I have a Goldenrod Dehumidifier in the safe and a dehumidifier in the garage itself. Keeps the humidity in the garage around 40-50% all the time. In the summer it pulls about a gallon of water a day out of the air. Also keeps tools in the garage from rusting.

All of that and wiping them down with a silicone cloth after handling keeps them rust free.

Just my .02,

I have had no issues but I've always lived in North Texas. If I lived at the coast, I'd have to talk with some locals before doing it.

My BIL has one safe in the house, and one in the garage. He battles rust with the guns in the garage, even with dessicant and oil. Mine stay in the house with no issues. I would never keep them in the garage down here. Way too humid.

Insulated garage walls and garage door makes a big difference. When we built this house they wanted a mint to insulate the garage walls.

I drilled 3 inch holes between studs and blew insulation and the put 3/8 inch paneling over the sheet rock to cover the holes. Garage door insulation kit from Lowe’s for the doors.

I have a mini split AC unit but I only run it when I’m in the garage and keep my door down as much as I can. The guns I have in the garage doo just as well as the ones in the house. I’m a hobbiest stock maker and even have turned English Walnut wood stocks in my garage safe for my next custom build.

I’ve had a gun safe in the unheated and uncooled barn for about 12 years. The dehumidifier is a plug in type Goldenrod. Never had any rust on anything.

I echo a lot of sentiments in here: 1.) it depends what your RH is at your location, 2.) put a dehumidifier in the safe and in the garage, 3.) put a wifi sensor in the safe to monitor temp and RH, 4.) oil your guns, 5.) monitor for issues

If the last one pops something up then figure out what you can do differently. Obviously bolt the safe down too
