Have mine at 100. But I'm prone to take shots that far and further.

Plus, I know where it hits at 50 as well. wink

If all your shooting is close, then go with 50.

There are many times when I get on paper at 25 yards and find that I’m 10” off at 100 yards

Seems like these thermal devices track differently than traditional optics , in other words if you’re accustomed to small shifts between 50 / 100 yards then you might find that thermal is more dramatic in relative poi shift.

I don’t know the science behind all this , I just think I recall saying to myself “wow that’s further off than I thought it would be”

So for this reason I zero at 100 yards

I sight in for 50, but shoot it out to 300 to confirm, only do this once a year. Mostly it’s sighted at 50 and confirmed at 100.

Sighted mine at 80ish yards since almost all my shots are 25-150. I figured in the middle made the most sense for me.

Well, what is your typical shot distance? What is your typical minimal shot distance and typical maximum shot distance.

DocH and I have the same logic. I zero at 100. Most of my shooting is 75-200 yards and a 100 yard zero let's me shoot without worry of holdover or holdunder.

My blk out I sighted in for 50 yards. My 224 Valkrie, which I'm shooting now, is sighted in at 100 yards since it's a flat shooting round.

nothing wrong with that. 85 to 120 POI in a 308 does not matter. We killed that pig.

60 yds, cause that's how far the feeder is from the kitchen window.

Here is what happens when you have a 200 yard zero and aim just below the ear on a hog at 85 yards, BTW. This is why I zero at the distances I shoot at the most. I don't want to have to be making a correction in aim for my common distance shots which are typically not at 200 yards or inside of 50.

Same here. My shots are typically 60-125 yards, usually under 100, so an 80-yard zero seems like a logical choice.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

Mine is sighted at 200. 95% of my shots are made from a fixed position at this range.

What caliber will you be shooting? That changes the best zero, for my guns at least. For my .308 and 300 blackout the best zero is 75 yards (at this zero distance I get the least variance in elevation/bullet drop within 200 yards). For my 7.62x39 AR, 50 yards was the best zero for the ballistics chart. Id recommend plugging you caliber/ammo into a ballistics calculator and playing around with the zero distances. It's really surprising once you look at the charts. A thermal that sits 3 inches above the bore really makes the zero distance more complicated than you would think, especially at close ranges.

Also... Always check your zero at least out to 100 yards when you're done. The first time I zeroed my thermal, I quickly got it on target at about 40 yards and went right into hunting. Took about a month to find out that my zero was really at about 400 yards, and my bullets were just crossing paths with the bullseye at 40 yards on their way to the moon. I'll never make that mistake again!

Here are the bullet drops for 55 grain .223 and 168 grain .308 at a 75 yard zero. If you get them dead on at 75 yards, the most you will be off within the first 200 yards is 1.8 inches low at 200 yards. I plugged in other zero ranges from 50 to 100 yards, and 75 was definitely the straightest shooting

My thermal doesn’t have much magnification and my eyes aren’t the best. I had difficulty getting a good zero at 100 yards. 50 worked much better for me. I am spoiled with high power. I was sighting in an AR today with a 1x6 at 100 yards and just couldn’t see well enough to shoot a really good group. 4” was about the best I could do and the rifle should be sub MOA. With my deer rifle and 24x I can shoot 1/2” groups at 100 yards.

I split the difference and sighted at 75 think longest shot I've taken was around 125 and it was no problem. That was on a 8" 300BLK so wouldn't take much longer shots anyway.
