The current (Summer) issue of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine includes an excellent read (The Facts on Doe Hunting) that offers research findings on how shooting does often impacts the local herd. Having read the article myself, the findings presented might change your approach in shooting does. This issue also includes another good read that addresses fawn survival.

I am a big fan of shooting does. Antlers hold zero appeal for me, good meat for the freezer if what I go for. And if I target does I don't have to worry about if the antlers go 13 inches or only 12.

Gotta shoot does, especially where I hunt. I don't have a oak tree in the woods under the age of 35 or so. The young stuff never have a chance with the deer herd like it is

Orphaned deer have very good chances of survival, but the presence of the mother does offer a slight increase in their chances, and even more so with young bucks. Because deer tend to nurse beyond the point at which fawns require it, leaving the mother results in a longer nursing period. The fact that orphaned deer often form new groups is something that aids in their survival. Also, young bucks will delay their natural dispersal if the mother remains present, some believing it lessens their chance in getting hit by vehicles during an earlier (and less experienced) dispersal that often happens when they're left alone. Mother Nature has instilled a built-in dispersal mechanism to ensure genetic distribution of breeding, with some bucks traveling 20 miles or more to find a new core area. Needless to say, an older and more experienced buck is more likely to survive such a trip.

What was my key takeaways? Does with button bucks should be left alone so that they get more nutrition and experience. Does with a young female are free game, while the ones with two might be worth leaving for better nutrition of two young deer.

I have rafters covered in antlers gathering dust. I have shot mulie bucks, whitetail bucks and blacktail bucks and all them antlers do is sit on the rafters in the barns. I tagged my 98th deer last fall. I doubt if I have taken 3 bucks in the last 20 years. You hunt all the bucks you want. I'll stick with the does.

I'd be interested in what the article said about shooting does and helping the herd or not? I want venison in the freezer but also want the herd to improve. Where is that synapsis?

While the article clearly referenced to the need to harvest does in order to maintain a good buck/doe ratio, it's my opinion it left it to the reader to draw their own conclusions after seeing the data. After seeing the data myself, I feel far more inclined to take a doe with a yearling after always avoiding it in the past. However, if I can tell she has a young buck with her, I'll give her a pass for the survival experience she has to offer him until he disperses on his own. If she has two fawns with her, giving her a pass improves the chance of survival, albeit slightly, of not only one but two young deer. That is to say, leaving her creates a greater impact than removing the doe with only one fawn. Others may very well come to different conclusions based on their own management goals. For example, the landowner who has too many deer may put the doe with two fawns at the top of their harvest list.

Just to summarize further, while the article offers evidence that young deer have good chances at survival without their mother, I felt the data also allows the hunter to make more educated decisions on which of these deer to take. Or even more simply put, the data allows the hunter to better fine tune their doe harvest strategy. It's why I recommend D&DH magazine to others because the writers do their best to educate readers on what research has found and let them decide how to use it.

How many times have I hear this....when should be kill our does? Before the rut or after it?
You kill does when your knife is sharp!

The only reason I can see for not killing does is if you are not killing bucks. It stands to reason if you have a perfect 1 to 1 b/d ratio and you kill 10 bucks off your ranch, shouldn't you take 10 does that same season?
It really isn't rocket science yet it seems that a lot of folks try to make it that way.

If your herd is balanced and the carrying capacity of the place is where it needs to be the math to me is very simple. If the numbers are low overall than let your does walk and populate the place to the numbers you want. If you overall numbers are high and the b/d ratio is out of whack then it is time to probably sharpen up more than one knife!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

True, but let's not forget there are those who will quickly say they want to see many deer on each and every hunt? Showing them evidence where taking certain does can lessen the impact on their deer numbers would seem to be a good thing.
