I am going mule deer hunting in Wyoming this fall but only have a 25-06. Any concern with that caliber not being big enough? If so what caliber would be ideal for that hunt?

It will work fine with the correct ammo and shot placement. I have killed mule in West Texas and in Alberta with .270 and 130 grain Core-lokt ammo. Both of my Alberta kills were one shot and down, putting the bullet high/point of the shoulder. Those 2 mature bucks were well over 300 lbs live weight. Shooting the rifle/caliber you are comfortable with is more important to me.

The 25-06 is perfect, spend your extra money on a very good pair of boots.

By the way, I dont know if its been said on other threads, but WELCOME to our forum. As for the 2506, I would not call it IDEAL, but I tend to lean bigger than some. If you are comfortable with it then I think its fine. Im just glad you didnt ask about a 22250.

That is a fine cartridge for you deer hunt. Use a good premium bullet and it should not be a problem.

I am going mule deer hunting in Wyoming this fall but only have a 25-06. Any concern with that caliber not being big enough? If so what caliber would be ideal for that hunt? I've killed elk, pronghorn, mule deer, whitetails, axis, hogs, etc with a 25-06. With my 257wby that loaded only 100ft/s faster then most 25/06 with same bullet you can add more mule deer, pronghorn, aoudad, elk, WT, and Oyrx You will be fine. Don't over think it

25-06 will kill any mulie that walks the earth. So if that is what you have and you can hit what you shoot at, take it. If you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle it is pretty hard to beat the 7mm Rem Mag for mulies. I grew up in CO hunting mulies and both my grandfathers and father and brother all shoot a 7mm just like I do. It is a very good round for the open country mulies are often found in.

Huge 25-06 fan. Never have been on mule deer hunt but I’ve never seen a deer or hog go any distance to speak of when hit in the correct spot. I’ve killed several 200+ pound hogs have fallen dead as a door nail where they stood when shot square through the shoulder with my tang safety 77 and 100 grain Sierra Prohunter.
Should buck the wind just fine as well

I am going mule deer hunting in Wyoming this fall but only have a 25-06. Any concern with that caliber not being big enough? If so what caliber would be ideal for that hunt? Are you kidding me?! That just wont work at all. The only caliber that will work for that kind of animal and hunting is a 6.5 creedmoor. You know that! 25-06 is plenty of gun for a mule deer. Use good ammo and put the bullet where it belongs and he is toast.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

You'll be fine with the 25-06. Maybe a bonded bullet but not necessary. Our mule deer do not have huge bodies, unless you get into an ag field hunt maybe. Make a good shot and no issues with your choice.
Good luck and which part of the state and when are you coming up?
