My dad and some buddies, all well into their 60s, are looking for a weekend hog hunt in October. His only criteria these days is that he wants it to be a BIG/Trophy hog, something he can be proud of as a wall hanger. Not interested in shooting a whole bunch of little ones, just wants one big pig.

His group is pretty spread out, San Antonio, DFW, even a couple coming from Georgia, so location isn't a huge priority. Lodging yes, meals would be nice, but some I've found so far just have kitchens and that'd be fine too.

Found a few on my own, but figured I'd check here if anyone has recommendations of ranches or outfitters that could make my old man's dreams come true? Thanks in advance.

I'd say he's setup for disappointment if that's the only measure of success. Just to see, I found this for $750, no guarantee, but an example. Is everyone prepared to spend $750 for their hunt?

I do wish you good luck.

confused2 my hog hunts were (first) 1,100arcer lease... Roughly less than a $ a day year round lease back in 80's.
Seen several hogs 200#+...
Hunted hogs following creek South of house, had a set up, several 200#+hogs.
bounce me tagoto place for hog hunts twas WMA's.. lots of 200#+hogs...

Like with deer leases, some have the $$$ for the Big Buck'$
lots of people pay thousand'$ for chance for a Trophy deer...

His request tis a Big/Trophy hog...
Also in my 60's... Failing health...
& do know what it takes ta back pac big hogs out 2-3miles back in...
Mine hunts twas for grillen & chillen...

Are these hog hunts with dog's ? Thar the ones were majority of people do get hunt...
Have hunted @ night, flashlight off slinger postal on hip...
Have chased, wounded hogs, on hands & knees threw thick stuff, night/day...
Have come across shows with little ones, bluff charge, 99% of time if they have means of escape, they take it...
Dogs on the heels, hog will run over hunter...

TXHunter0619, looks like the places has some good opertunities...

cheersBest wish's & stay Safe..
Looking forward ta results...

Not to rain on your parade, but anyone who guarantees you a truly large hog is most likely providing you with a fed pig. The wild really big ones are pretty smart, and you bump into them when you bump into them. I also happen to think they don't make particularly attractive wall mounts, but that's just a personal opinion. All that said, hog hunting is a blast if you approach it with the right attitude.

Like Syncerus said a guaranteed big hog hunt is nothing more than a canned hunt. A truly big wild boar (250 pounds +) is not something any outfitter is going to be able to guarantee. I have hunted hogs for right at 25 years now and killed my share of monsters, but I could not have told you when or where I was going to kill any of them and I even have as many as 17 game cams at any given time to work with as well. Big Boars are very unpredictable. You cant pattern them. I even hunted one particular Boar for 3 years before I caught up with him.

Hope your Dad gets a big one! I would proceed with caution though.

The problem with being able to find really large hogs in the wild (not canned) is that you have to be hunting some place that 1) has hog activity and 2) isn't being hunted and/or hasn't been hunted for a long period of time.

If you have a place actively being hunted, hunters tend to shoot the largest hogs, first, like what the OP wants to do. That immediately creates a shortage of large hogs. In properties in both Bosque County and Montague County, I have been able to document the decline in average hog size with regular hunting. Last year, Pig Popper and I started on a new, 500+ acre property with bad hog problems that was not being actively hunted. We shot a bunch of hogs over 250 lbs. That started in May. By December, we were having trouble finding hogs over 150 lbs. If we see big hogs now, they are interloper boars that show up very infrequently. The rest of the local population has been kept younger and smaller (less than 150 lbs) for the most part.

So getting a new property is always exciting, particularly when you hear that nobody has hunted it or hunted it regularly for X number of years. That means it has a greater potential for well established, older and larger hogs to be present. Even then, there is no assurance that there will be large hogs.

The big ones i cam across were all sows, biggest boar right @ 200#'s...

Best wish's...

My small place South of Bowie is over run with hogs. But, we seldom see them, even when deer hunting. When we do, it is generally a sounder with a sow and little ones. We shoot them when the opportunity arises.

I don’t believe in shooting coyotes. They are the only thing that’s on our side.

You might try cross posting in the exotics section. Some of those HF ranches have big pigs as an add on when hunters shoot their trophy early.

I don't know these guys personally, and have never hunted there. I do have a friend who has hunted deer with them and he spoke highly of the operation. I do know there are lots of pigs over in that country, lots of big pigs. But looking at the website it appears he does his hog hunts in Jan-Mar, I assume so as to not interfere with his other hunts and that does not fit your criteria for Oct. But it is all I got, so use the info as you will.

Not sure if the Nail Ranch still does hunts but when I hunted there in the late 90's we saw a lot of hogs. Some big hogs also. They only hunted hogs in Feb back then, so not sure what or if they even do any hunts today.

Clearly you are not raising any livestock.

Guys, I dont think he is looking for a "guarantee", but I think yall are right for letting him know they should be prepared to go home empty handed if they will only shoot a real big one.

No outfitter worth his salt will guarantee a hunt.

Too many factors. Not the least of which are the shooting abilities of the client. wink

LOL, I don't think he would have stipulated a trophy boar and not any small hogs if he wasn't looking for some sort of assurance or "guarantee" of getting on one.

How ridiculous.

I will say this too. I think Oct is going to be tough. That is during bow season, with rifle season fixing to start up. Most outfitters are really going to be focused on deer at that point and not wanting to mess up spots with pig hunting. Just my thoughts on it. I have quite a few spots I can hunt anytime except Oct-Dec.

So what?

Coyotes are opportunistic feeders. Not always predators or meat either.

If you have grapes coming off, or pecans, or lots of grasshoppers, they'll eat them too.

It doesn't put them "on our side". The only side a coyote is one is the coyote's.

If they are gonna wipe out the hog problem in Texas, they better get to eatin'. wink

bang ya'll spending too much time argueing...
scratch Think [i]Dave Davidson twas one brought up yotes..
Simply said they help out...

Ya'll needs ta gets ta rifle shooten...
Getting permission ta help out tis biggest problem...

back as DNS mentioned Oct. tis archery/deer & lease members are doing stuff ta get ready for deer/rifle...
& it will be tougher ta find place ta hunt hogs...

Thar be 24/7/365 season on hogs, lease i was on used that thar, took advantage, stay ahead...
On WMA's, it twas more for grillen & chillen for me, not erradication...
First several years, came across sounders with 100+ hogs several times..
The AK's were first used then the AR's became more affordable...
They made a big differance in hog population,
Hunting pressure made big differance.
popcorn in fairness, the place did get flooded, & deer/hogs moved out, some were still thar, had ta know the high ground...
& The surrounding land owners had the 24/7/365 opertunity...

Hope the hunters get a chance @ a big trophy hog...
After deer season tis over tis best in my opinion.
Tis whin i hit the WMA's...
Best wish's...
