Wife said she would walk in the morning with me if we did it early. Just so happened I was up around 6. It was a nice 65° this morning when we headed out before 7. Did 2 miles with a couple hills mixed in. Started running out of gas after 1.25 miles, but made it home with out having to call EMS. Hadn’t done more than run the weed eater since March. Should be a little more strenuous after the morning temps warm up.

Since retiring Ive been pretty inactive except when Im at the lease or occasionally coaching some youth baseball. My doc keeps telling me I need to walk. Whatever else I do is good but walking is the biggee. I dont know how many miles but I walk pretty fast for a little less than an hour. Try to do it daily but hard to work it in sometimes. Im completely healthy and not over weight so I dont worry if I miss some days. It can be hard to establish any kind of routine when retired, but Im a creature of habit and I feel like, and hope, I will eventually get into more exercise.

5 by passes Oct 23. Was walking 3 miles 2x day every day for 3 months with a late season elk hunt as my goal. Made the elk hunt and returned home New Year's Day. Haven't really walked much since and put on 22 lbs. I'm starting back today because if I don't deer lease work/feeder filling is going to really suck.

One mile each morning pulls out and about during the day. I never over do it..

You are doing just over 3 miles at a good steady pace for an hour.

The only reason I know that is I do that on a daily basis.

Years ago, I ran about three times a week. Not far, couple miles.
I got older and the feet did too, no longer able to bear the pounding of running.
Doc says shift to walking - so I've been doing that since my early 50s.

About two miles a day, five days a week. I take the bird dog, she runs, I walk.
If I don't do it, I miss it.

side benefit - now know all the neighbors and they know Cookie.

I’d love to take a bird dog, but can’t run them off lead around here. They’re get run over.

For cardio health you get the greatest benefit, by walking for at least 45 minutes at a brisk pace, which is defined as a 20 minute mile or better. All steps do count for general fitness I just want to emphasize that extended moderate exercise helps the cardio system the most. Running for 20 minutes gives similar benefits.

Thats how my doc explained it, pretty much.

I start walking first week of April, weather was still nippy then.

I do 100 plus miles per month, a little over 3 miles per day, takes a little over one hour, walk at a 18 minute pace.

Leave the house around 6 am, with days getting longer and starting to get warmer in the morning I will move my walk time to around 5;30 am this weekend.

I enjoy the walk, always see about 50 rabbits, tons of squirrels, bobcat sometimes, I used to see coyotes in the neighborhood but since they attacked so many people they trapped them and killed them.

I have a very nice 3 mile walking trail in my neighborhood and adjoining hood

I was walking every day before my knee surgery. Now I'm lucky to hobble around the house. Miss it.

We have an eleven-month-old Labrador who MUST be walked a few times a day. Lately I have been taking him on my 4 mile runs, too. He is learning to run with me but it is a process. Between my wife and me we get in 3 to 4 miles a day with him. [Linked Image]

Got out late this morning. It was humid, no breeze thank goodness it was overcast. Made the 2 miles right at 45 minutes. Started running out of steam at the 1.25 mile mark. The last couple hills at the end are rough.

68, Im not sure but i think the "running out of steam" part is the important part. I think thats why nsmike emphasized the "extended" part of the exercise. If it dont hurt it dont help. No pain no gain. etc
Actually, those are probably bad examples, especially considering various health conditions and issues. Lets rephrase and say you need to get the heart rate up at least some, at minimum.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I’m not looking for it to “hurt “. Just need to get out and move around, had a few lbs sneak up on me last couple months.

I'm 76 with a normal resting heart rate around 47 beats per minute. My cardiologist worries about that and hints about a pacemaker in my future. Quad by-pass in 1997 and Carotid artery clean out in 2004.

I walk 1.5 miles most evenings at a 3 mph pace. I can't maintain a pace faster than that for anything more than a a few minutes. At the end of most of my walks I push the pace up to my max for the last 100 yards or so. That pushes my heart rate up to 77 bpm and I totally run out of gas.

If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you.

If you want or need a motivator log your mileage. I made an Excel spreadsheet many years ago and used it for years. I hated those red zeros. One year I logged 830 miles.

About the shoes mentioned above, I'm having more trouble in that area than ever before. I've had about every brand you can think of over the past thirty plus years of walking. I returned some Hokas last week. I'm on my fourth pair of Brooks, with a problem with them now. I'm wondering if I've developed flat feet, or lower arches. High arches in shoes are killing me.

My wife is trying to get me to go to Dallas to some place called the Good Feet Store. I'm fighting that the best I can first by trying different inserts. Plus after turning 65 in the past year I haven't learned everything Medicare + my Medicare supplement might cover. I'm wondering if there are Podiatrists that specialize in athletics, that would know more than most about runners/walkers.

I use Map My Walk. Usually do 2-3 miles. Got a walking track around my sunflower fields. Come across all sorts of critters. Had stare downs with hogs several times, and the occasional rattlesnake. Sometimes I walk with a pistol and sometimes not. Seems almost every time I run into hogs I don't have it.

Been walking up and down my driveway (1/3 mile long) lately, been to wet to walk around the fields.
