Pretty mean. We had a bunch on a ranch I hunted near Mathis, TX when I was a kid in mid to late 80's. They will charge. Supposedly hate dogs, and have a bacteria in their mouth that causes a nasty infection. (that's what killed the pup I was talking about). I've never ran into them with dogs and dont want to.

Yes they can be mean, and they can/will shred a dog quick. Those javi teeth don't play.

Pig hunting buddy of mine who is a long time avid pig dogger has lost several dogs to javelinas.

Yep, Javelina (unlike hogs) have 4 large canine teeth that mesh very nicely. A boar 'hog' has a set of Cutters and Whetters and can 'tear' a gash in you or a dog with the cutters but its not like being 'bitten' by a Javi. I'd much rather face a hog.

This is just an 'average Skull' from one of many I have killed....but you can see what I mean. They are 'equipped' to defend themselves, make no mistake.

Yessr, I’m very familiar with them. Still have 3 javi heads in my freezer right now I need to Euro. I saved 3 of the best ones. My Nephew killed a Boone & Crocket javi lol, but shattered the lower jaw & part of the skull so I chunked it.

Couple of years ago I was on a lease in the Jones Ranch (Alta Vista) SE of Hebbronville that was called the Javelina Ranch. Lots of good deer, pigs, and chingos of Javelinas. I wanted to put together a THF off season javi/pig & predator hunt down there (everybody there hated them except for me), but there ended up being too much lease drama so walked away.

From what I have seen they must be nearly blind. I walked up on several groups of them out by Van Horn and was easily able to walk within 20 yards of them

They see OK, just more tuned into 'movement' than anything else and even then....prefer to 'back up' what they might perceive to be a threat with one of their other senses (hearing or smell). But as with hogs....if they smell you...its game over.

There such little critters, but now I have a new respect for them.

Wish I could replace the feral hog territory with Javelina Territory in Texas...

Wish we had some in Hardeman Co. We have a season for them, but asking around with the old timers and GW, there hasn’t been a Javelina in that county ever. confused2
