Spent the holiday weekend with my wife’s family in Rockport. Had a good trip but the fishing was slow. Took out a guide Saturday morning and caught several undersized reds and trout and one legal red. That afternoon my boy said he wanted to go so I took him down to the canal where we were staying with a handful of shrimp with low expectations. He caught a few piggie perch and then had a big hit. He said he was scared it was going to pull him in but I let him fight it by himself. He was on cloud nine telling everyone his fish story.

That's awesome right there. The best part of the story will be how that fish seems to grow every time he tells the story!

I measured him. I knew he was close but was happy it was legal. You can see the word red a little before the end of the tail.

Sometimes all it takes is just one fish to turn the trip around

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

He'll remember that fish forever, good job Dad.

Next time you're in this neck of the woods, if you have time, give me a holler.

Chill Skinner, no game wardens here. I've been out of the loop, not even sure of the legal length on Reds, it's changed so many times over the years/decades...

Gotcha. Maybe I read you wrong, my apologies. cheers

Reds were 18"-30", but that was a long time ago.

Roger that Sir! I still remember my first red like it was yesterday. I was about Luke's age, fishing with my Grandpa. My red was 18" and he sure felt like 38" roflmao

Man that boy is growing Red!

People still fishing Packery Channel from the piers and Fish Pass from the shore? They do any good? Packery was always decent for some Specs and occasional Red, Fish Pass more so for Reds and some Specs.. The rocks of Baffin were always our go to spot for oversize Specs and occasional large Reds. King Ranch shoreline for flounder on spoons..
