I broke down & ordered a Recteq Bullseye grill the other day. I'm getting ready to try my hand at using a pellet grill for the 1st time. While I'm waiting for it to arrive I thought I'd get some pellets so I'll be GTG.
I noticed that there are all different kinds (flavors) of pellets & quite a variation in prices. For briskets in my offset stick burner I prefer oak & mesquite wood. Are all wood pellets created equal whether I buy the expensive traeger brand or what they carry at walmart or tractor supply good enough?
TIA....

I use Post Oak for Brisket A combo of oak and Hickory for general cooking Apple for making bacon. All are good just have to find your taste.

We use various brands of pellets. Lumberjack produces a little more ash, but more smoke. Green Mountain Grill Texas blend is also a go to. They burn cleaner, but to me, not as much smoke produced. We also use an Amazn Smoke Tube each time we use our pellet grill. We have a Yoder and very pleased with it. Some complain about not as much smoke, but we don’t seem to have that issue.

Pellets are definitely not the same. Traeger pellets suck in my opinion. Bad smoke and lots of ash. I was a big fan of bear mountain pellets when I had my Traeger. Cheap pellets won't hold together well and will turn to sawdust when you pour them into the hopper. I've never had brisket on a pellet grill come out as I wanted it. You can get smoke on them, especially if you use the amazn smoke tube. The bark, the tenderness, just everything seems off with a brisket on a pellet grill. Everyone has told me that "they" can make a great brisket on a pellet grill. I have yet to have had one that was great. Definitely have had some good ones on a pellet grill with almost zero work, so there are perks.

Do what you like, but there is no substitute for real wood.

Some pellets are made out of just the wood you want like mesquite, hickory, oak, etc... Others use Alder for a filler and then mesquite, hickory....., but they are 100% real wood. I like Alder so I'm not stuck on getting only the purest pellets. I usually get Traeger since they are available locally.

To tell you the truth, I would too, wouldn't necessarily have to be a traeger. I just like the ez bake oven meme. That wood burner is over 35 yrs old and smoked about every cut of meat and nearly every vegetable you could name.

If you can get one that you can sear on, they’re great for grilling. Simple as propane with some wood flavor. They’re just disappointing when it comes to smoking in my opinion. I just can’t see where 20 minutes to get charcoal going is so difficult it justifies the price tag.

My boss went pellet smoker a few years back, ordered one with all the bells and whistles, xlarge hopper, chrome grill plates, wifi/blue tooth, whole 9 yards. Monitors it by his cell phone and adjusts the temp as needed. Works good until the power goes out. He will tell you, a wood burner imparts more, deeper smoke flavor.

I have both and plan on keeping both. I like the ease of the pellet smoker for sure, but I still like being able to turn out great tasting brisket on my offset smoker. I also don`t think a pellet smoker can turn out great tasting pulled pork like a wood burner can.
