This past Fall I had West Texas Ordinance at Ackerly build me a 6.5-284. I had a Remington SSLA laying around to build on and went with it. I wanted to run 140 grain bullets and Clayton had a Bartlein 1:8 barrel on hand. I also had a TriggerTech trigger and put everything in a Grayboe stock. WTO had the gun ready in November and the fun began. I put a target scope on it and began working up loads with Lapua brass , Nosler Accubonds and Berger Elite Hunter both 140gr. I worked up excellent loads with both bullets but have settled on the Berger’s. Last month I finally got my hunting scope, NightForce NX8 2.5-20 FFP. This gun is so much fun to play with. Last week I got all my dope together on the load and ordered a new turret from Kenton Industries.

It’s not difficult to achieve 3300 with H1000 or Retumbo. 4831 shoots best in mine and is right shy of 3000 usually in the 2950-2975 range. The 284 case is a laser for sure!

What does that turret run? How’s it work?
Nice rifle, I got one set up for hunting similar to yours.

Nice! I’m running 4831SC in mine also. But RL26 and 156 Berger EOL has been lights out to 1200yds. Taken over 10 deer from 300-1000yds 1 shot kills with that combination. The 4831SC and a 140berger shoots consistently in the .2”s or less. I love it!

Turrets are 129. Go to their website and pick the scope you have,,,, go from there.

Really like the round and so far I have loaded for it is with 4831SC and have loads for Nosler Accubond and Berger 140gr VLD hunting. The Cooper with a 24 inch barrel I am running 2900fps with the 140s. Both loads shoot in the .3s

Personally I would not go shorter than 24” because this is sort of a magnum round.. but of course there is all kinds of folks that do all sorts of interesting stuff like 18” 300 win mags etc..

It all boils down to powder selection really. If you go too short may as well shoot a creedmoor or a 260 or a 6.5x47

H1000 and Retumbo with a mag primer, but word of caution here is the primer pockets are opening up on the 3rd firing.

Not surprised. All the data that I've seen shows max velocities at 3000ish fps. Even 264WinMag data doesn't show 3300 with 140s.

I’m not sure there’s even data listed for retumbo, I got that idea off a f-class shooter who was an exceptional hand loader. I don’t remember the exact load but it was 58ish pretty full case, my throat is long to so most of the bullet is hanging out there pretty far.

Just to be clear and not sound like a troll here the rifle I was doing this white has a 32” 1.45” straight profile barrel, and is 1:8 twist. I’m sure in a 26-27” Barrel exceeding 3k should be pretty easy with a 140.

I still have that rifle, if I can figure out how to attach a bipod to it I’ll take it to seniors 500 yard shoot one day..

Well at 34" bbl would make a difference! grin Curious: what does the rifle weigh? Still would watch it carefully, if primer pockets are expanding that quickly.

TAB I figured for those velocities you are running a long barrel and slow powder. Throated long helps it hold more powder as well.

42 pounds, solid aluminum and stainless has to lean diagonally across my safe to fit.. it’s obnoxious my dad built it from scratch, has a ar15 grip and a krieger barrel. That’s the only two items bought besides a hand full of screws and set screws he even made the rings, and base is on a 30 moa cant

He originally built it to shoot the 600 yard clay pigeon matches.

I finally got my hands on some Retumbo this week and going to play with it . Now the problem is lack of bullets. My gun is really liking Berger 140 Elite Hunters. Can’t find any anywhere.

Looking good! I still have not shot my 6.5 PRC but have some factory ammo to break it in with and then will use the Hornady brass. Can't find any Lapua brass nor Berger 135 Classic Hunters or 140 Hybrid Hunters.
