Some of you older members can remember when you didn't have pigs. My sister recently got the first confirmed pig sighting in her area of NC, (a small one hit on the highway). How long do you think it will be until they're creating problems?

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

My ranch had no pigs for many years. Two years after the first sighting, there were sounders of 10-15. They are everywhere here now which I really don't an issue with. Free BBQ and they eat every rattlesnake they can find. I haven't seen a rattlesnake here in two years. If you have livestock and fences that need to be intact, they are very hard on fences.

If you see them you have a problem already.

Years ago I saw my 1st hog one fall while deer hunting and killed it. Next fall I was bow hunting the same stand and a sounder of 20+ came in. We've had a bunch ever since.

I grew up in South Georgia farm and pine country as a kid, and pig country is rattlesnake country!! If the pigs like it, it's 'cause there's not much human presence and the snakes enjoy the same peace and quiet!!

They sure prolifically inhabit the same ranches down here.

I'm on many ranches a year to see them.

It doesn't take long at the rate of three litters of six to eight per year from one sow.

I gas rattlesnakes for profit and have for 30 years on multiple 1000+ acre properties. Occasionally their numbers would go up or down, depending on rainfall and the health of the rodent population. The pigs moved into this part of the county and within a few years the rattlesnake dens were empty, even on properties that have never been hunted for snakes. Just before the pigs showed up, they were at their highest numbers I've ever seen. Everyone who lives here on ranches has made the same observations. South Texas likely has other determining factors such as better cover for snakes, so they may coexist better there. If you don't think pigs eat snakes though, you have a lot to learn about pigs.

Each area tis differant... First lease got on had some hogs. Twas on 4 different leases, bang no hogs...
Area lived, didnt see hogs until mid/late 90's... & were very few...
They traveled the creeks...

Hunting presure plays big roll... Some area's are over run, others not so much...
Trick tis staying ahead of them ... The shows i took rarely had 4 piglets...

nsmike, have heard rumors thar be some wild hogs in MN... thar was a truck over turned, by town grew up, all hogs were captured or rifle grill info from a friend rofl

Colt .45 there have been reports from around Big Stone and one herd that was established near Detroit Lakes. The wolf pack on White Earth split, one part moved into were the pigs were, very quickly the pigs disappeared. The herd only had 8 to 10 animals.

Where I hunt in the Panhandle, the pigs and the snakes must get along. I would be more than happy for the pigs to lower the rattlesnake population.

TP&W hasn't done much on the study of it because nobody wants rattlesnakes, but they have done some. I'm sure you know how to use Google. Florida has but I'm not here to be your teacher.

Come on now......you are usually very quick to post a link to support your opinion.......yeah I know how to use google and so do you......and as you found out there is no problem finding links that disagree with this theory but NONE that agree with your statement/opinion.......

I'm so thankful I didn't employ you as a retirement planner. I thought about it, but thanks be to God I didn't. I have a feeling it wouldn't have worked out.

Estimate of herpetofauna depredation by a population of wild pigs. BTW wild hogs shake off a rattlesnake bite like it's a mosquito. I can post videos if you don't believe that either. roflmao

Whoever doesn’t know that pigs will kill a snake hasn’t been out in the country much.

Yes I’ve seen it in person, hogs are crazy about killing snakes. & I don’t give a rats [censored] who believes what or not.

So if there is less rattle snakes, I suppose at some point we will have more mice and rats?

Yeah, not a single mention of rattlesnakes in that study, only the tiny little red bellied snakes that are smaller than the night crawlers many people use for fishing.

Quote
Chip Ruthven, a Certified Wildlife Biologist, relayed the following information regarding his interactions with rattlesnakes. “I am sure feral hogs do eat snakes on occasion, but they would most likely avoid a rattlesnake. I do not recall snakes being listed on any of the feral hog diet work that has been done in Texas. Snake predation by feral hogs is most likely insignificant at best.

They were awful hard on the East Texas quail population when they showed up in force around the mid to late 1970's. Or it was one heck of a coincident. I haven't seen quail around here in decades.

One shot is all it should take.
