Looking to get my dog into some snake avoidance training.

Is there anyone in the Austin area that can do it? I’m open on most weekends and would like to bring him in sooner rather than later.

Any contact info/website would be great.

PS - is one session enough, or do I need to go back for multiple sessions?

Give Winters a call. I've used them multiple times. Used to be refresher courses were free. They are both in Austin and Burnet. And no, one session is often not enough. I run my dogs thru a snake breaking session every year or so until they get so wise they won't leave the kennel if they recognize a training session. Snake broke dogs often will attack other snakes such as indigos and leave rattlers alone. I have one dog that won't hunt if he thinks there is a snake around until you move him about 100 yards away--he will attack indigos if you don't stop him.

We take our two hunting and test hunt labs every year. They recognize the scent from 20 yards away and have to be dragged near the snakes!

One sessions is not at all enough. Don't know why some dogs it will last their lifetime, others 6 months. I had a male and female. The male has passed but the female is 16. I had to repeat the male often. The female, never repeated it. I bet you couldn't throw her on a snake right now and she had it once 15 years ago.

I do my own snake training.

That training needs to be refreshed with your dog. If for no other reason than to see if your dog is still adhering to the training.

I also use the word "Snake!" in the training so that when the dog hears it, they are on the lookout, and know danger is near.
