Kristine and I on the south rim of Canyon De Chelley with Spider Rock in the background. This canyon is the second largest in the USA but is known as the "Grandest Canyon" in the country.
Adios,
Gary

Most of the overlooks were closed except this one and that is because there is not gate. We drove to this overlook before we found out that the canyon was closed.

Beautiful smiles & photo. Seems so weird that I've never heard of this canyon, so had to look it up. It's on the trip list now. Glad at least one gate was unlocked, seems a shame to keep National Parks closed, especially for covid, a place where you can't contract the disease.

what a beautiful Natural Wonder!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Canyon De Chelley is considered a National Monument instead of a park...not sure I know the difference. I do know that we lion hunt right along the rim of the canyon and if this was a national park, there would be no hunting. It sure makes me nervous when I see one of hounds working right on the edge of a 1,000 ft. plus ledge.
Adios,
Gary

Great photo and beautiful place

Owned by the Navajo Nation, you can view Canyon De Chelly from the rim or visit the canyon floor when accompanied by a park ranger or Navajo guide. Spider Rock, which is a 750-foot sandstone spire, is it’s most recognized feature.

Guess if that is right the Navajo basically control it with the canyon itself being the monument.

I thought Palo Duro is the second largest canyon in the USA

Having seen both, I would say that Canyon De Chelley is quite a bit larger than Palo Duro. Palo Duro takes up a lot of acreage but does not have the vertical walls or depth. There's one location near Black Rock which can be seen on the horizon where the vertical walls are almost 1,500 deep according to my Navajo buddies. This is one of the areas we hunt for lions.
Adios,
Gary

The closest town is Chinle, AZ which is in the Navajo Nation. While there's a Best Western and a Holiday Inn, I recommend staying at the Thunderbird Lodge which is quaint and sits in the mouth of the canyon under some big cottonwood trees.
Wait until the Navajo open the canyon back up as it has been closed for over a year due to the China virus. There are jeep tours of the canyon and horseback trips available. Cliff dwellings scattered up and down the canyon similar to Mesa Verde.
The Hubbel Trading Post that you have seen in many old westerns is still in operation less than an hour away from Chinle near Ganado, AZ.
The Red Desert is also an easy commute from Chinle.
Adios,
Gary

Actually I think it's called the Painted Desert, I call it Red because so many of the rock formations and soils are red.
