I'm sure all y'all know this, but I'm a native Texan, been licensed for a long, long time; and have been paying AAA for a long, long time. . .

It’s my understanding that isn’t quite true. It’s for non emergency use, and they will offer help, but any service trucks or tows will not be covered by anyone but you.

Here is according to the state what will happen.
"There seems to be a preconceived notion that when you call this number, you're going to get a free wrecker tow," Standifer says. "That is not correct. There will incurred costs if there is a mechanical failure for the car and it has to be towed."

Some of that confusion stems from an email that circulated in 2001, telling drivers that if they call the number, the state would pick up the tab for their roadside service.

Here's what actually happens. Motorists who call the hotline are connected to DPS operators in Austin. They'll contact a nearby trooper or local police agency to send help or go and check on the motorist. Standifer says he wants more drivers to be aware of the resource, but he says the hotline is specifically intended for non-emergency situations.

Found this also,

Yes, Texas driver’s licenses include a toll-free number that stranded motorists can call to receive roadside assistance. However, the towing service summoned by calling that hotline is not provided for free, nor is it paid for by taxes. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will dispatch tow trucks to drivers who call a toll-free number printed on state driver’s licenses, but towing service is provided by contractors at the motorists’ expense, not as a free service underwritten by state tax monies. The Texas DPS web page for their Stranded Motorist Hotline clearly explains this policy:
A toll-free number was established in 1989 to get help to motorists whose vehicles are disabled on state and federal roads in Texas. The number, 800-525-5555, is printed on the back of all Texas driver licenses and ID cards, and is for motorists to use when reporting a need for non-emergency assistance. It is not a substitute for 9-1-1 and it is not a Customer Service line to answer Driver License questions or other routine matters for other divisions of DPS. It is for motorists who have a legitimate need for assistance on Texas roadways. Despite what some e-mails say, motorists who call the toll-free number are not provided a free yearly tow or a free voucher for fuel.

Since towing service is offered with many auto insurance policies, this might be a good time to check and see the towing distance where charges begin and if you have any rate protection when you go over.

Thanks for the clarification, guys! I'll let other folks know that the information I sent them is incorrect. I got it from a "road warrior" who's on the highways and byways of Texas all the time, selling his products. I better get him straightened out as well!!

What most people don't know is they have road assistance with their auto insurance policy or any policy and you need help. You call them and most likely they will call several different places to get the lowest price they can to save them money.Wife needed a tow truck several years ago so she called Good Sam who we had road assistance. After awhile she called them back to check on the tow truck and they told her they were still trying to locate one.Wife hung up and called a local tow company and he was there in a few minutes. These people are NOT your friends !.She sent the tow bill in to Good Sam and got reimbursed and had a few choice words with whoever she spoke with.

Good Sam isn’t particularly good. We had a blowout on the travel trailer. I looked on the iPad for a tire place close by that could come help me, and I found one maybe 10 miles from where we sat. The wife reminded me that we had a Good Sam membership. I called GS and told them of my problem, and they sounded helpful, and I told them about the nearby tire place. Time passed...and time passed. Hours passed. I decided to call the tire place myself, and they had never heard anything from GS. I asked for their assistance and they came right out and changed my tire. I called GS again to see how they were doing, even though my problem was solved, and they said they were “working on it”.

Well, they can bite my....

We had Good Sam 25 years ago, also had AAA and towing on our insurance. We kept AAA and dumped the others, after using all 3, AAA is the gold standard.

I have heard the same story from many many rv's with mostly tire problems. When we were active rv's we also had Good Sam but after wife called them wanting assistance and they couldn't provide it we decided we didn't need them anymore.

AAA was always the kiss of death when I was helping a stranded motorist. Typically a 2.5-3 hour wait for a tow truck in Fort Worth. Older folks use them, younger folks would just have me call a rotation wrecker and they would be on scene in about 10-15 minutes.

There's only one you need with a RV. "Coachnet" Large or small even your personnel vichels are covered. Wreckers can but shouldn't tow the big rigs (Buses) . These folks are the only ones that hustle and get you fixed on the bigger campers with a Landoll trailer for tow. I bought a new 2018 F250 Supercrew and at 5500 miles tire went down driving outside Austin . And can you imagine No jack in brand new truck. Called them, Coachnet, and they sent a Wrecker Service and had it fixed in 30 minutes didn't have to get out in the rain to fix.

Try that when the closest town of any size is 30 or 40 miles in either direction.

I'm sure AAA would be 4-5 hours in those circumstances.
