It's getting to where I see almost as many hogs dead alongside the road as I do deer. This got me to wondering, which on would do the most damage to your vehicle? Let's say they were the same weight, and you hit both head on at the same speed, and same vehicle.

Hog for sure. More compact (mass more centralized). Somewhat sturdier bone structure, tougher hide (especially larger boars). Just not going to 'explode' like a deer can. Depending on the 'vehicle' more likely to go 'under' after taking out the bumper, headlights, radiator, condenser, etc....

About 8 months ago I watched a woman going about 25 to 30 mph and hit a hog. I would guess that the hog would go about 100 lbs. It was just short enough that she caught it with her bumper on the driver side of the car. Hog was sent spinning but got up and walked away. Slowly . Almost no visible damage to the bumper. A taller animal would likely have smashed the hood or gone over the top and through the windshield.

A clear conscience is often the sign of a fuzzy memory.

As a rule, I would guess deer do more damage just because their bodies are taller.....but a large hog could do some pretty impressive damage too. I knew one guy that ran into a bunch of smaller ones in the dark one night and he spent 1,500 bucks to get his front end all working right again and it was a 3/4 ton pickup.

Hitting hogs in just about any vehicle will mess your day up.

Large hogs can flip your vehicle because they tend to go under..

Knew a father and son in Uvalde who hit a sounder crossing the highway, and it rolled their pickup, killing them both.

Seen several vehicles totaled hitting hogs.

Given the choice, I'd choose to hit a deer any day.

I came across a wreck where a 1-ton service truck hit a pregnant sow (approximately 120lbs) going 75. It totaled the truck, airbags went off, carnage and truck parts were everywhere. The density of a hog is capable of doing damage that I haven't seen a deer strike do. I've hit a couple deer and never had any damage like what that sow did.

Driver had his bell rung from the airbag but was okay, sow and her companions made artwork on the FM road

My Older Brother related a similar story a few years ago about a guy that worked at the same Chemical Plant that he does. According to DPS he hit a hog (they found the animal) it caused his truck to flip several times killing the driver. That was in South Texas too.

I don't see them (dead or alive) in the same numbers as deer, but increasingly see smaller dead ones on the side of the road.

I suppose it depends a lot on the habitat and local population.

Very thick cover and woods in my area and animals of all types cross the roads regularly.

I expect there might some type of records/trends with insurance companies...but I don't have access to any.

I hunt in Lee County, which is sorta ENE of Austin. There was a local guy who rode a motorcycle to work every day. Several years ago he set out in the morning, and en route encountered a sounder of hogs on the roadway. He hit one and was killed.

I used to drive to Port Arthur a few times a year. I'd see a dead hog on the side of the road on Hwy 73 between Winnie and Pt. Arthur about every fifth trip.

Saw a F150 that looked like it had hit a wall, The hog was only about 100 pounds, but it totaled the pickup.

My Daughter hit one evening on her way home from basketball practice. It was only about a mile from our home (Farm to Market Road).

I could hear her Firebird when She pulled up in front of the house. Sounded like she had headers on her car. She came in all shook up and told me that she had just hit "Something Black" and that the entire passenger side of her car "went up in the air".

I looked briefly at her car and then went down the road to find a hog (about 80-90 lbs) laying dead in the ditch. Remarkably there little damage to the plastic front of the Firebird, but it did knock Her wheel out of alignment and tore the catalytic converter loose from the exhaust pipe.

She was traveling probably 50 mph at impact. It was more of a glancing blow on the passenger side....involving the tire more than the front end. A full frontal impact might have much different...but in this case better than a deer...which would have come right up the hood and into the windshield.

The hog darted out from the side of the road and She had no time to react or even know what it was.

A buddy of my was a tool man that serviced many automotive repair shops in small towns here in north Texas (Montague, Cook, and Wise counties). He got to see a lot of damage done by animals on cars. Our conversations about such accidents spurred me in doing some research on the matter.

Long story short, hogs typically do damage from the grill and downward. Deer typically do most damage from the grill and upward. In other words, people typically hit and run over living hogs where as they hit living deer that they deflect off the vehicle. Deer sometimes come through windshields because deer often leap or bound when startled or scared. Hogs typically never come through windshields because that isn't how they typically run. Plus, even just standing still, deer are taller than hogs. Think of it as the difference between hitting a person standing up or a person squatted down. The person is the same weight, but what is going to get damaged when struck by the vehicle?

Contrary to popular belief, hogs no more cause cars to rollover than do deer. In every case I found where a car had rolled over after being involved in a collision with an animal (including one raccoon), the drive lost control of the car. Rollovers happened due to overcorrective steering (hard swerves a high rates of speed), hitting a curb while swerving, going off road into a ditch that resulted in the rollover, or lost of control in a field after going off road. The actual impacts with hogs and most other animals do not themselves cause rollovers, at least not in any of the cases that I found. In numerous cases, the rollovers actually happened quite a distance from where the animal was struck.

Aim for them and they will move out of the way. Faulty evasion causes far more issues.

But I don't want to drive in the ditches.

That depends on the ditch!
