Check with your county agent. He will know what works best in your area.

Surmount or Mesa Vue. Mesa Vue is faster and is the newest on the market.

Spraying works but can take up to a year. I've cleared probably 20 acres of cactus at our place using the tractor bucket. Shave off the cactus and about 2-3" of dirt and pile them up somewhere. Occasionally rotate and work on the piles and it will die off. Spot spray any new pads that show up each year.

That MezaVue we spot sprayed on the cactus took about 5-6 months to get rid of the cactus. Normally it does take about a year but that stuff is better, not that 6 months is a short time.

Tordon has worked well for me on both prickly pear and jumping cactus
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

We did about a 100 miles of fence lines with that and it had them down and dying in about the same time. Conoco aerial sprayed 14 sections next to my place and it took them all out, knocked the leaves off all the mesquites but they came back. It drifted about 200 yards across the fence and killed all the Prickly Pear in that area.. Last year we started showing signs of some kind of fungus or Crown Rot in the prickly pear and it's taken out around 75% of the cactus in some pastures. They start turning black from the base up, the thicker the patch the faster it took them out. Don't mind losing some of the Prickly Pear, but the cows need it during the winter. It seems worse in area's that have overhead foliage such as Mesquites. Most of the open air patches seem to have survived.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

On small areas like that I have had good luck cutting an piling the big stuff and wetting the stump with roundup/remedy/clear pasture and used motor oil.
If it is smaller stuff just mowing it and walking it with a shovel and pulling the root up will probably get it done.
It's hell eatin em live

Occasionally rotate and work on the piles and it will die off. Spot spray any new pads that show up each year. our dozer guy takes a D4 and scrapes the ground, piles up the cactus and burns it. Works damn good too. I was gonna go the Surmount route but decided to get after it with the bucket instead.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Didn't make me mad at all, that part was so thick with prickly pear you couldn't walk through it. It was about a 2 mile strip going down the West fence.

I've got a couple pastures with cacti problems. One isn't crazy bad so I've been digging and pilling it up. The other is really thick, probably about 5 acres. I don't have time to mess with it now, but will need to decide if i should spray or scoop it out with the tractor bucket.
Anyone know a company that I could hire to spray it??
