Apparently, 3 relatives were hunting Coryell Creek and separated, lost track of one another, and somebody shot at a running hog without knowing where the others were, striking one relative in the abdomen.

Helluva an idea. Let's 'split up' (so nobody knows where anyone else is).

Genius.

This needs to be the subject of a Hunter Safety thread more that the one about the guy that fell out of a tree stand. He was a little careless/reckless.

These people were just stupid.

Everyone is capable of having a lapse in judgement. Another interesting fact is that statistics have shown adults are more prone to hunting and shooting related accidents than kids.

IMO, hunting can be much like driving when you know the roads are going to be unsafe due to weather conditions or the likelihood of encountering drunk drivers. The hardest decision to make can be that of staying home rather than go out in unsafe conditions or have doubts about the people with whom you'll be sharing the woods.

True enough. But all three of them at the same time?

There were two accidental shooting deaths here in the Houston area that come to mind and both involved just one individual. The first incident involved an older man who was taking his shotgun out of this vehicle at a local shooting range. He apparently had left the gun loaded since his last trip to the woods. Somehow it discharged while he was removing it, killing him. The second involved a local school teacher who had been duck hunting on the outskirts of Houston. He had placed his loaded shotgun in the bed of this truck, apparently pointed towards him. It discharged when his dog jumped into the back of his truck and somehow engaged the trigger, the blast killing him.

I suspect both of these men were seasoned hunters who simply made a lapse in judgement. We all know it's easy to do, perhaps most when we let an overconfidence in our safety awareness get the best of us.

Here's the link to the TPWD 2020 Hunting Accident Report for those who may be interested in reading about last season's reported incidents.
