Last Tuesday evening, Larry Weishuhn and I were about 10 miles west of Menard on the San Saba River when I noticed a flock of large birds flying down the river from the west. As they passed approximately 30 above us and perhaps 50 yards away, I asked Larry what kind of birds they were. Larry, being a wildlife biologist, confirmed what I was thinking...white pelicans.
I have never seen a white pelican within 150 miles of this location. By the way, Larry counted 59 in this flock.
Adios,
Gary

I have seen them here in Navarro county a couple of times - always during spring or fall migration time. But I am at least 200 miles east of Menard.

We have a pelican here in Abilene, showed up about November of last year. We have seen it at Cameron lake that is in town. Someone else told us they saw one at Kirby lake south of town.

Cool thing to see, but they aren't lost.

All of Texas is within their range and Menard is within their winter range.

With that said, they may not be common visitors, but not expected either.

There were or are some that winter each year at Lake Ray Hubbard. Saw them every winter for over 20 years I lived near it.

I see them every year at Possum Kingdom. 10-20 birds usually at once but have seen more too. Seems they leave in winter and return in summer. Started about 10 years ago. I never saw them in the 20 plus years of going there before.

We have them on Bob Sandlin every winter by the hundreds, along with the cormorants.

Have seen them by the thousands on the Arkansas River. They do migrate from the coast to southern Canada / northern US, so not uncommon to see large groups traveling.

I always see at Somerville and didn't think much of it. I guess they're the same ones we see on the coast.
