In NSTRA it is only steady to flush. What does your dogs have to do to be called broke.
Ever heard a handler hollering, "whoa, whoa, I said whoa you SOB?"

I've said it a bunch. Trial Broke = steady to wing, shot, fall and release to retrieve to me. Meat Dog broke is different to me. Broke = Let's me flush and shoot. Then fetches dead bird back to me. I like them to get to the bird quick.

Steady to wing shot and fall. Honors other dogs point. Release to retrieve on name or honor for brace work. Deliver at heel to hand when I ask for the bird. Relocate on its own on running birds. Flush on command when required. That’s the way I train them and they are meat dogs trained to hunt in silence.

Have you ever seen a field trial dog come un-broke after hunting wild bob white quail, while you were shooting?

Have you ever seen a field trial dog come un-broke after hunting wild bob white quail, while you were shooting? On pheasant for sure. His eyes got big as saucers and he had to have that bird in his mouth as soon as possible. I've seen young trial dogs crowd wild birds a lot but after a bit the wild birds broke them from that. Wild birds have always been the best dog trainers in the world.

Delmar Smith touted the chain gang for curing gun shyness. I have found that things pups to a tie out in the gallery at a field trial goes a long way in helping prevent gun shyness. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I have seen several handlers put an entire litter of wiener pups in a little circular pen at trials.

Steady to wing, shot and fall. Heels, backs other dogs and stops to flush. I hear all the time that their dog is broke on pigeons or quail or whatever the bird is but not on (insert bird here). I don't buy it, you're either pregnant or you're not. You cant be half pregnant or pregnant during certain circumstances. It comes down to training. Also whoa to me doesn't have anything to do with bird work. Whoa means whoa whether you are on a walk around the block and you tell your dog to whoa before crossing the street or if you tell your dog whoa while hunting, they both mean stop and don't move until released.

I’ve seen wild bird dogs come unbroken while trialing with pen raised birds. They were collar smart.

One size does not fit all. All dogs do not break out the same. I started on at 10 months old. She ended up a two time champion. Cracker broke out easily but never found her share of birds at a trial.
Some great dogs simply can not be held back. You can't plough a thoroughbred all week then race it on The weekend.

I ran my youngest one in a double hunt test. I knew running that many braces over one weekend, was going to cause problems. By the third brace you would have thought whoa, meant Go.

Hunting wild bobwhite quail is mostly done by one to three hunters, which is great. The field trials give us venues to share the experience in more ways than one. I was responsible for the lunches at my local trials and helped sponson a dinner at a national trial. The trials gives you a feeling of togetherness and inclusion.

I just joined a Weimaraner Club, even though I don't own one. They have more venues, than my area Vizsla club.
