What is your opinion on store bought grated cheese .Do you use it or not. My wife bought some years ago for something she was going to cook and take somewhere. I had to use the rest or throw it out. I made enchiladas with the rest of the package and I was not happy with the taste or how it melted.

But I can tell by looking in the grocery stores that is a very popular product(Pre-Grated) by the amount of shelf space it is given. If I`m going to take the time to prepare a meal for my family that requires grated cheese ..............it`s gonna be freshly grated. But that`s just me.

I use it for convenience sake, but do believe that block cheese that’s fresh grated tastes better and sharper! Always have blocks of cheddar, pepper jack, parm, Romano, and Corona in the fridge. RV is an exception!!

The store bought packed cheese is coated with cellulose, to absorb moisture and prevent clumping. Look on the ingredients to see where it is listed, and try to get the least possible. It’s basically wood pulp and other left over plant fiber from other processes, can’t hurt you but why add it to your diet.

I buy in the block form and shred my self, cheese melts so much better without the corn starch or whatever they put in it.

Use it for convenience, but it’s just not the same as fresh grated from the block.

It contains sawdust to prevent it from sticking. I try to just use block cheese unless it is a big recipe.

Not near as good tasting as fresh grated. Grating unlocks the flavors in cheese.

I prefer to shred my own cheese, though have used the pre shredded cheese.

Cellulose or corn starch is in the already shredded cheese and does dry it out some so it doesn't clump but doesn't melt as good and is dryer.

Cellulose is the structural component of plant cells and is non soluble fiber for us people. It is used in lots of things including filler for medication. Wood is about 40-50% cellulose cotton has the highest concentration of 90% cellulose.

Bill, sawdust is about 50% cellulose and some for food does come from wood

But I know you have picked a lot of cellulose being that cotton is 90% cellulose

Always Grated from a block, only takes a minute to grate and tastes much better.

We mostly use already grated. You can buy varying types of cheese already grated or in a block. Some of it is cheese some of it is some weird form of imitation cheese and some of it is one step away from plastic.

We were going to switch over and start grating our own, but then I noticed that the the bock of cheese is more expensive than the already grated stuff. It rubbed me wrong to pay more for it and still have to grate it. My in-laws grate a block at a time and put it in a ziplock, but it pretty much all sticks together.

It is ok, BUT fresh grated is better no question. I don't care for the extra stuff in there. They can make a bag of grated cheese last over 3 months without getting moldy. I have to question that.
