I'm 72 and been retired since I was 59 1/2. No college for me. Went to a trade school and became an electrician. Didn't get rich by any means, just comfortable. Never missed a meal or had a bill I couldn't pay. The biggest problem I see today is complete lack of desire and willingness to work. I have plumber and electrician friends now who would absolutely give their left nuts for a trainee they could count on to show up on Monday morning. Only prerequisite able to pass a drug test. Oh btw, be willing to work with both hands and not have a damn cell phone stuck in their ear.

My observation is that education isn’t confined to a school and/or degree. In a way I’m over educated with an MBA that I never really used. Except in one way: I learned to peel back the outside and see what makes a business tick. That covers a greater area than I can put here.
The question is whether a person is successful. That is the thing that books could be filled with. But rarely are since we all have different ideas about success. But, if a person can’t support his family, he/she has failed.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

And they have this "thing" Wednesday afternoon. And on...and on.

Lots graduate from college with worthless degrees and the do extremely well for themselves Very true. There are a lot of places that the only requirement is that you have a degree. You don't have to know anything just have went to college.

College or no college isn't what it is about. If degreed or with no degree it's all about the choices YOU make. When you get to the spiderlike intersections so often found in life, you had better put yourself on the right path.

You don't have to know anything just have went to college. Yep, it definitely opens up doors, and in some cases opens them up faster then those without degrees. Even if they are worthless degrees. I would venture to say almost all hard workers will be successful whether they have a degree or not. If you add just one good trait to hard work your chances of success multiplies. The more traits you can add the higher the odds.

The more traits you can add the higher the odds. Hard work is step one, but I would say it isn't the most critical. The guys who mow my yard work hard, the roofers and framers who built my house work hard, and the laborers who work in a warehouse driving a forklift or mechanics, all work hard....harder than me for sure. But more importantly you need to work smart, then be willing to make sacrifices either financially, with time, or with spending. Along the way a little luck comes in handy and you'll usually need to take a calculated risk or embrace an opportunity when it arises.....that's where the cream rises to the top. The point you made about adding good traits is a good one as well. An acquaintance of mine once told me 4 things you should strive for to increase your odds of success....Wisdom, Boldness, Resources, and Vision. I thought it was really good.

Those 4 attributes are definitely game changers especially in conjunction with each other.

Engineers aren’t that weird or quirky these days! The hell you say! Just remember, the engineer at TXDOT that engineered the bridge/overpass/exit/entry you're driving on...couldn't get hired in the private sector.

If I had to point to a single characteristic, I'd say the willingness to defer gratification is the most important trait in achieving success in life.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this.....I think pursuit of gratification can be a catalyst to achieving success. I certainly didn’t act on every whim and financially I was fairly conservative but I didn’t deny myself past what I was willing to. At the end of the day success was the gratification I was ultimately looking for anyway

There are obviously examples each of us know that can make a good case for college, as well as no college. What is really interesting to me is the term "successful" (not financially successful) is equated with $$$$ . I don't necessarily look at "successful" = $$$$.

Working hard physically is not what I meant, but the working hard trait still applies. The hard worker will more then likely start moving up the ranks. He'll run his own crew, hell maybe one of these days start his own company. Hard workers don't usually stay at the bottom. There are too many people looking for them.

If I had to point to a single characteristic, I'd say the willingness to defer gratification is the most important trait in achieving success in life. Spot on. I went without for many years to be retired at a fairly young age, have my retirement ranch and more money than I will ever need. I watched other folks buying crap they think they need and would just shake my head. I did splurge on new clippers this week to cut my own hair, because my 20 year old clippers finally stopped working. Little stuff like is that how a person reaches freedom from employment.
