And that is the real game changer I mentioned.

Yet another day of another week we will here all the self employed folks crowing about how awful it is.

I've owned my own business since I was 26 yrs old with a young family, it was incredibly tight for a few years starting out. I drove a $750 pickup I bought and got running out of an old mans pasture in Bunger, Tx. That said, the time it gave me to never miss a single thing my kids did growing up was priceless. Fast forward 20 + years and I have several businesses now, the financial freedom it has given me has been more than I could have ever expected. I made it thru about 2 years of college which I hated every minute of before I had a path that fit me better, it's a great option for some but not for everyone. I see guys every day without degrees that make $300k and guys with degrees that make $50k, there clearly is no magic formula for everyone. I tell my kids to do whats best for them.

Does Business School count? There is a realistate agent in my neighborhood who has done well. Her husband is a fireman. He made a few post on here and friended me. Mrives

Willing or know?

When I was graduating high school and trying to decide what to do, I didnt know even a fraction of the possibilities and I see more every day. I think chance has a big hand in directing us where we all go.

Willing and know are complementary. If you are willing to seek knowledge and opportunity you will end up knowing about options.

I wouldn’t take a base salary and capped commission, that’s sounds like insanity to some.

No, most people are comfortable so they arent seeking career changes, so when you come across something new it seems random

Not at all....I'm a few years older than you and spend the majority of my waking hours looking at business opportunities, real estate, financial strategies, etc, (and I've been doing that for a long time) and I learn new stuff weekly. There's thousands of different ways to make money, and a lot of it, but most people aren't willing to put in the work, make the sacrifices, and take the risks.

Education is about making yourself a well rounded person. It is to separate you from the masses. Education is the one thing in life that no one can ever take away from you. I have been a Rig Welder, Pipeliner, Pipeline Inspector, Landman, LEO, Criminal Defense Attorney and I am now an educator. I have been able to do everything in life that I want because I am that well rounded person. Now, I sit in an air conditioned building, and I sell what I know, not my labor.

Is secondary education for everyone, no, of course not. But if you are capable, then you are selling yourself short by not seeking some form of advanced education, be it college or a trade school.

You did what?

I believe for some folks this is true. It was for me.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated high school. Went to work for a painter and when I had the opportunity to do my own thing I did and was successful at it. I got tired of that after a few years and by a chance meeting was introduced into the world of real estate. By another chance I met my current partner. There was no master plan and I thank God every day for the opportunities he has provided me.

So yes, life is a lot of chance. But that doesn’t mean you cannot use the knowledge acquired since high school and use it to provide for different endeavors. Doc Horton brings up a good point about continuing education.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My 16 year old daughter struggles with dyslexia and she's looking into going into welding or being a mechanic. She plays around with my welding machine at home and she loves helping me work on cars. She likes to get her hands dirty. I'd never tell her not to go to a trade school. I used to work in the oil field and made a lot of money but I wasn't happy, I took a $70,000 a year pay cut and came back home. I had to file for bankruptcy but I'm home with my family and now doing something I enjoy. It only took me 3 and a half years to get back on top of a new career. BUT I'M HAPPY

This is basically the way I see it. For those with curiousity and intelligence, a broad education is its own reward. And it doesn’t stop when a degree is obtained. The most secure, interesting and contented people are well-rounded, broad-minded people who never quit learning.

There are only about 3 degrees worth pursuing. Doctor, lawyer and engineer. The rest are just a waste of money in my opinion.

Not the best idea,, lawyers are now a dime a dozen, their are to many doctors now that are not living the dream anymore either unless you go the full distance with a specialized field such as cardiology or Orthopedics, Engineers I can’t vouch for so I’m clueless on those but I have numerous close doctor and lawyer friends that have steered their kids into other fields away from their own due to the current situations. It’s mostly IT Tech field and programming stuff, something the future is going to need a lot of...
