For you guys who hunt in west Texas, do you prefer AT, RT or MT tires? My previous section of our lease had well maintained oilfield roads. My new section will have open fields and one decent road. Mainly concerned about muddy conditions and what type of tire is best suited. Other than the lease, I don’t go off-road.

For mud I choose a mud terrain. For rocks I choose a mud terrain. For sand a AT/RT is ok.

But in West Texas it don’t rain much

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

A/T or R/T but I haven’t liked this first set of R/T tires I’ve had. I’ve always had good luck with M/T’s but can’t justify them so I’ll be back in an A/T. The place I hunt in west Texas has mainly sugar sand hills, slick clay flats, and some stanky black mud, A/T has been great in every situation where I haven’t high centered. The place I hunt in east Texas is all sandy loam and gets soft when wet, again the A/T’s have served me well

If it's a dedicated off road vehicle choose MT's. They are designed for it and are self cleaning to an extent. If you're driving hundreds of miles to get there to hunt, I would go with AT's.

I've always had AT, but when I got my current truck I got RT. I haven't noticed much difference in road noise and they have worked well in beach sand, mud, and rocks. I like the looks of MT but I just can't justify them for my driving when AT and RT have worked so well for me. Like most people, most of my driving is highway getting to the mud, sand, and rocks.

Check out the Cooper STT Maxx. More agressive than an AT but not quite a MT. Behaves well on the highway and does good in the sand as well. Ran them on the F250 for 40,000 miles and still had 1/3rd tread left when i sold it.

Best thing you can do for sand is let some air out.

I run A/Ts 'cuz they work fine and I have to drive on the highway 99% of the time.

I’m actually sitting at Discount Tire right now having those tires installed. Based on my budget and needs, I think this tire will work. Honestly my truck only has 15k on it and wasn’t expecting to put new tires on. Apparently P rated tires suck for driving on your west Texas lease.

Yeah, we have some property here in West Texas and my old tires were not only almost bald, but they were not cutting it at all. They were Transforce HT's and it was not a good time with them. The Pathfinders should do an excellent job for you.

For mud and rocks, definitely a mud tire, Toyo MT's have a beefy sidewall the will do very well with rocks and by far out perform any AT tire in mud.

These half AT highway tires sold by a lot of manufacturers have thin sidewalls and very mild tread patterns and will not do well in mud or rocks.

I run 35 inch Toyo MT's, my buddy has 35 Toyo RT's, we launched our boats a couple weeks ago in black gumbo mud, no real ramp, both mud rigs, he got stuck and had to use his winch to pull his truck out, I launched after him, I never spun a tire launching my rig. Those RT's have a tighter tread pattern and do not stay clean to do as well in mud. He has a winch on his truck for a reason, and he uses it quite a bit, at some point he will listen and buy MT's, lol.

This is something I've noticed over the years. A lot of tires I've seen that are designated AT aren't even close to what I would consider AT.

For rock Id go with those pathfinders over any MT.

Those pathfinder are very sipped and will stick to rock 300x better than and large lugged MT that aren’t sipped.
AT is just Jack of all trades and will never master any. MT are great in mud and sand but are terrible on rock, ice/snow.

You are correct that the RT hybrid tires don't handle mud like a true MT design. But, they will handle mud much better than a straight AT will. If you are going to hit some really serious mud regularly, then get the MT tires. I drive a lot of highway to get to my hunting grounds, so I chose a hybrid. The Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I have had the trail grapplers at one time, and they were phenomenal in the mud. Even the nastiest mud wouldn't stop me. I have also had various at tires, highway tires, and other true MT tires in the past.
Where I hunt in OK, the ranch roads have been there since at least the early 1900's and are packed down pretty good. There are two creek crossings with rock bottoms and mud banks. Even after heavy rains, I haven't had any issues with the hybrids, however, I have had issues with the ATs in the same spots. Where I hunt in Texas, we have a gravel driveway, a whole fleet of ATVs, and a tractor. My truck rarely leaves the gravel driveway there unless it is good and dry.
In years past, I have hunted FL swamps, GA red clay, and north LA. Definitely, 100% needed mud tires in those situations.
