I have a friend involved with gene modification in mosquitoes, make the next generation sterile. She said when released in the wild it works almost all the time but occasionally get something strange. Ask her about hogs. She said a mosquito that is huge and angry you can swat. A hog could eat you.

Wasn't that the idea behind the screw worm program?
It worked for them.

It does work for the screw worms and they are hoping it will work for mosquitoes. The thing with the screw worms is that it is a continuous fight.
Currently, the screw worm program involves releasing nearly 15 million sterile screw worms a year at a choke point in Panama. They have a factory there that grows screw worms 24/7/365 for this task.
To date, I don't know of a higher vertebrate program that has ever worked for controlling a population. For example, there has been no success in dealing with urban rat infestations in places like NYC.
