PM me a price without the clip and the blade options, I buy roughly 20-30 custom knifes a year for customers and I’m looking for a new builder this year to change it up a bit.

Shane...I really like that knife...nicely done!

So these slip joints, do they stay open? You have made comments about the blade not locking and I get that but what keeps it from closing if you're trying to use it? Does it open like a normal pocket knife where it just "clicks or fits" in an offset or something.

Thanks and sorry if a dumb question...I'm not a big knife guy.

hey Judd, not a stupid question,,, there is no lock on a slip joint knife,,, there are two main pieces of steel in the knife,, first is the blade, this part is very similar amongst folding knives,,, the locking ones still pivot on a pivot pin of some sort, they just jack into the tang of the blade to put whatever kind of lock
so instead of a lock, the slip joint slips around the pivot past the 2nd piece of steel inside the handle, it's called the back spring, as it sounds, this piece of steel is heat treated to not make a cutting edge, but to make a spring,,, the front of the spring where it hits the tang of the blade is called the walk, the tang has 3 positions for the blade to come to rest in,,, closed, open, and some don't have the third, but the third is in the 90 degree position,,, the 90 position is kind of a safety when closing, as it somewhat catches the blade so you can make sure your fingers are out of the way when closing
the spring tension is a fiddly thing to adjust, as are the adjustments around the blade tang,,,, we are talking .001 of an inch kind of tolerances

anyway,, what holds it open, in the 90, or in the closed position is the spring tension from the back spring

by the way,, the slip joint concept dates back to the 1600's according to my research,,,,

here is a picture of the rough inside guts of a couple i was working on

if you have further questions or what have you, please don't hesitate to let me know, thank you and have a blessed day
