Does anyone on here train dogs to track blood trails or know of someone who does?

Several I have started with just showing them a blood trail and they too to that naturally. You can make false blood trails to work them and see if there is interest. One my Dad had I took a boned out deer leg and drug it around and started her out near where that trail started and she found the bone. Next day drug around some saved liver from that deer and she did a 1/4 mile trail of it. Having a prize for them when they find the object helps reinforce them. My Brit does ok at it but he doesn't bark when he finds one but just licks the blood off and looses interest. To my knowledge the ones he has not helped recover survived. The ones he recovers he gets a piece of liver for payment.

The training trails it helps to have them something at the end of the trail. Like a deer bone, liver or something.

I use my pudelpointer to blood trail deer. I did some training but for the most part it was already hard wired. I used diluted blood frozen into ice cubes I could throw so the dog could not track me. It amazes me how small a percentage of blood and how far apart I can space it. In retrospect the training did more to build my confidence. The dog just needed opportunity.

She has only trailed my own deer kills, but my chocolate lab, just did it on her own. Every year, when we shoot a deer, we drag it some distance, and kinda hide it. She knows when we put the little bell on her collar, its time to trail. She really gets excited.

I trained my beagle. When she was about 8 weeks old I started making trails of her food to find her dish. After she got that down I started making trails longer and obstacles and just dragging a piece of food along the floor. Then I used a boned out leg bone drug on a string and finally saved some blood. Have had her find several things we were unable to.

What kind of pup? It makes a difference.
