He was damn lucky he survived this, shrapnel cut the carotid artery.

If you shoot a 50 and use surplus ammo, be careful.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I've never understood how putting a 50 cal on an AR-15 lower was a good idea.

Well anyone shooting surplus ammo out of a 50 is rolling the dice, I’ve done it plenty of times but I stopped a long time ago...

Bet he'll have a permanent 'flinch' after that.

Lucky man to have survived it.

Lucky man in many ways. Quick thinking on his self trama treatment direct pressure plugging artery and medical team action.

He said hot round. But he also had a round shot low? He could have had a detonation of the last round which would have also likely destroyed the action. Slow burn powder and undercharged case it can happens.

Thanks for the post.

technical
combustion of a substance which is initiated suddenly and propagates extremely rapidly, giving rise to a shock wave.Compare with deflagration.

The Difference Between Deflagration and Detonation
https://www.thoughtco.com/explosions-deflagration-versus-detonation-607316

Combustion (burning) is a process by which energy is released. Deflagration and detonation are two ways energy may be released. If the combustion process propagates outward at subsonic speeds (slower than the speed of sound), it's a deflagration. If the explosion moves outward at supersonic speeds (faster than the speed of sound), it's a detonation.

While the action of deflagration is to push the air in front it, objects do not explode because the rate of combustion is relatively slow. Because the action of detonation is so rapid, however, detonations result in shattering or pulverizing objects in their path.

Deflagration
The definition of deflagration, according to the "Collins English Dictionary" is "a fire in which a flame travels rapidly, but at subsonic speed, through a gas. Deflagration is an explosion in which the speed of burning is lower than the speed of sound in the surroundings."

Everyday fire and most controlled explosions are examples of deflagration. The flame propagation velocity is less than 100 meters per second (usually much lower), and the overpressure is less than 0.5 bar. Because it is controllable, deflagration can be harnessed to do work. Examples of deflagrations include:

internal combustion engine (used in any vehicle that uses fossil fuels such as gasoline, oil, or diesel fuel)
gas stove (fueled with natural gas)
fireworks and other pyrotechnics
gunpowder in a firearm

I do. Still a pain. When he starts out by saying, "You should watch it all," I know it's going to be too much trouble.

Watched that yesterday... Had it not been for his safety glasses he might've lost an eye when that one piece flew in his face.
He knew what to do and it saved his life.......

Think I'll get one of his shirts,

watched this yesterday and was amazed by the whole story. Definitely has a guardian angel (his Dad).

He was able to make the round fit, so he shot it, despite the fact that isn't something you are supposed to do. SLAP rounds are not .50 BMG spec and can damage non-M2 guns like Barretts.

But he says it wasn't anything he did. Hmmm.

Despite his claims, no way to know if the round was over pressured, had a problem with the sabot and brake to cause over pressure, if there was damage to the gun from the previous SLAP round(s) being fired, or if there was a defect in the gun.

He loaded an unknown round in his gun so yes he did it to himself. Sad to see and glad he’s ok but that’s a crapload of powder charge to be playing with unknowns. Seen a guys 50 blow up at Redcastle gun range back In 2007 in Tulsa and I never used ball ammo ever again after that. Only known hand loaded rounds after that!!! I have a scar on my shoulder from the damn thing blowing up so I bet it happens way more with these rounds than most realize... The age of videoing is simply capturing the carnage now,, I won’t shoot anything anymore that I don’t know for 100% certainty of its load.. Once you see one of those blow up you can’t forget it.

Had to do some reading, as I did not know what a SLAP round was. The general consensus is that it does not shoot well through a brake, as the sabot may catch on the brake. That might explain why the rounds he shot were going in different directions. Also might explain the KABOOM if part of a sabot lodged in the brake and he fired another round behind it.
