To negate the naysayers That say all the people from Texas they know that moved to Alaska didn't last I'll say the opposite. I know two families from Texas who moved to Alaska and loved it. One moved back after a decade or so only because of family in Texas. I have met several people in Alaska that were from Texas and had no plans to ever move back.

As someone who has looked at jobs in Alaska after every trip I've made there, I say go for it. If I could find a job in my field in Alaska, I'd move immediately

I'd consider it especially if kids aren't in play, makes an adventure like that much easier of a decision.

That would make it hard then, especially if you have to go through the courts for changing up visitation, etc.

I'm in Texas because of a job offer I just couldn't refuse, that was 19 years ago. It was a big enough deal for me to not want to think "what if" the rest of my life. I cannot even imagine not being here now...my wife came to TX kicking and screaming. 9 years ago I was in a position where i was leaving that job and asked if her if she wanted to get closer to her family that I'd look in KY/TN area. She said no...so here we are. No plans of moving until retirement...then it's just to get away from all the metromess people and taxes. The big towns really have turned into a cesspool...but unfortunately, that is where the money is.

Good luck...I say do it if it's something you're interested in but always have a plan B to come back. Not sure if you live around family now but that's been the hardest part about being down here...it's just us and no family what so ever, I have dealt with it much better than my wife.

Power to those who move away, I guess someone has to do it. It would have to be money that would allow me to move away and retire in less than 5 years and come back home set to live the life of luxury before I would do it. I had a lot better prospects in Houston and Dallas than San Antonio but we are from here, so here I am. It has turned out fine and I wouldn't move away if I had a do over.

I seems I should have been clearer. Non-residents are required to have a guide to hunt Dall Sheep. On the low end, that's about $20k. Residents can hunt them without a guide. SO, that's like adding another $20k to your pay. Of course there are additional hunting benefits to being a resident but that's the one that stands out most to me.

Probably not much hunting in Unalaska but they get a ferry every two weeks to Kodiak so there is access to deer and bear without flying.

Nomadland living is a thing you know and howling....YOLO but significant other and kids likely poo poo your deal

I think different places in Alaska,different prices. I know when we were there in 2010 diesel and grocery prices were basically the same price as they were here.We pulled our RV so we don't know what room rent was but eating out was basically the same.Going through Canada everything was much higher.Average summer temp was 54 degrees.

Palo Pinto County > Alaska

Just moved back to Palo Pinto after 3 year hiatus out in West Texas. I already told the wife we aren't ever leaving again. I travel alot all over Texas for work and it's one of if not the best counties IMO. Alaska would be awesome for about 3 months out of the year, the rest would suck big time.
