“Interesting take. I have owned both a Springfield mil-spec and a Colt Series 80. The Springfield got sold quickly. The Colt will be passed on to my son one day. It has a better trigger, smoother action, handles a wider range of ammo without jams, and in general is a much nicer gun.

I have shot a Springfield Operator and it's a much nicer pistol than the mil-spec. I think in the same price range, the difference in Colt/Springfield is mostly just feel. But the cheaper springfields are a major step down from Colt/Ruger/Springfield/Kimber performance & quality, in my experience. The trigger and smoothness of the mil-spec weren't even in the same league as any $500+ 1911 (I paid $400 for the mil-spec at the time and sold it for $475).”

I prefer the 70 series 1911’s in a GI configuration. Colt and Springfield make good ones. You can customize if you like but countless GI’s are testament to what a solid combat pistol those two are in original form. Both have better triggers than the series 80. The triggers in all 3 are good and easy to make great. Both of mine are bone stock. I shoot pretty good. I’m not good enough to benefit from upgrading from a GI configuration. The Colt is prettier and has a better resale value. The Springfield shoots better, is not finicky about mags and has a more durable finish. With 1911’s magazines are probably the #1 cause of reliability issues. I shoot the crap out of both and have no plans to sell either. I like to shoot the Springer best. To buy and shoot the snot out of with no consideration for reselling, the Springfield is a better value, which is what I understood the original poster to be looking for.

I almost didn't buy my Colt because it was an S80 and I'd heard the triggers were awful. I tried it out and either the S80 is completely overblown, or the previous owner of mine had trigger work done, because mine is the best 1911 trigger I've ever felt. And that includes Springfield Operator/Loaded and others. I'm leaning towards thinking he had work done. I've shot other S80 Colt guns and the trigger was surprisingly good, but not as good as other S70 configurations and not as good as the one on my S80. But in general, I agree that I would prefer a S70...my only point of this post being not to turn down a gun because it's S80.

Converting a S80 to a S70 is a fairly simple diy project with readily available parts. It likely has been converted instead of cleaned up.

Look at Venture Firearms. I think he has The Rock Island Armory 1911 for a little over $700

What year was it made?

I don't recall off the top....1995-ish

Impressive that it was made in West Germany in 1995...

All guns made in the Kiel factory are considered West German pistols, whether they were made before or after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Goodness...

Dang...are they that much now? I can't keep up with prices. I paid $400 for mine and swapped the ambi safety and hunched mainspring housing for GI parts...along with putting a short guide rod back in. It's a cheap pistol that runs like a top, has good sights, and a VERY good trigger for a 1911. Best dollar value in 1911 ever ... unless they're now $700.

Pass the gravy.

Here is a few I would look at:

Glock 34 Gen 5 mos. I know you said you didn't like glocks but if you haven't looked at the gen 5s try them again

XDM OSP Elite

Beretta M9 A1

Sig 320

1911- Save a little more and buy a Springfield RO. Maybe even in 9mm

GP100 or Smith 686, probably the smith. These would stretch your budget a bit too, but are both nice to use up that 38/357 ammo

Other than a Glock 17 which you are very familiar with, I’d highly recommend a CZ 75. I have an old one made in the mid 80s with rudimentary rights and it shoot greats.

It’s close. I want to like the 1911 better but the CZ is so good.
