Read they are searching an area where an oil slick was spotted. Said oil could be from ruptured fuel tank or the crew could have dumped the fuel to decrease weight and surface the sub.

MY QUESTION: WILL FUEL OIL ON A SUB MAKE IT MORE BUOYANT OR LESS?

They probably blew the fuel out with pressurized air to gain buoyancy.
Doesn’t sound good for the crew of that boat.

They think the submarine is lying well below crush depth.

They changed location of sub and this new location depth is 184 to 385 feet.
If they dump fuel oil (with compressed air) the sub buoyancy will be more positive. But this compress air is also used to blow ballast tanks water to surface and keep the ship on level keel. Don't want to use it all up. Great Depth will rapidly use up compressed air to surface. Its a German made diesel electric. Don't know what the oil slick means but wish the best.

Update on information.

Quote
The navy said it believes that the submarine sank to a depth of 600 to 700 meters (2,000 to 2,300 feet), much deeper than its collapse depth, at which water pressure would be greater than the hull could withstand. The vessel's collapse depth was estimated at 200 meters (655 feet) by a South Korean company that refitted the vessel in from 2009 to 2012.

Or below?

Quote
There's been no conclusive evidence the oil slick was from the sub. Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono said oil could have spilled from a crack in the submarine's fuel tank or the crew could have released fuel and fluids to reduce the vessel's weight so it could surface.

Margono said an unidentified object exhibiting high magnetism was located at a depth of 50 to 100 meters (165 to 330 feet) and officials held out hope it is the submarine.

Maybe they dumped it to make an oil slick so someone can find them.

Looks like they went to crush depth and imploded the vessel.
Found it on the bottom in three pieces by DSRV in 2600 ft. water depth.
No survivors.
May they RIP.

I served on two WWII diesel electric boats (USS Diodon and USS Charr) and my prayers go out to the crew and their family members.

Sad news. Wonder if they'll attempt to raise it to determine the cause or leave it as a grave? Pretty deep for a salvage but not technically impossible - purely expensive.

I had read where there was suspicion that the Chinese might have sunk it.

Was the Indonesian sub one of our old diesel electric boats, or was it purchased from another country?

Just my curious .02,

I'd read it was German built. Commissioned and bought by the Indonesian Navy back in the '80's.

correct

The German-built submarine, which has been in service in Indonesia since 1981, was rehearsing for a missile-firing exercise that was to take place on Thursday. Tjahjanto and other military leaders were to attend.https://news.yahoo.com/indonesian-military-says-submarine-missing-113530997.html
