A friend is willing to cut me what I consider a good deal. He wants $20k for a clean and non abused 2015 LTZ Crew Cab Z71 4x4 with 165k miles and delete 1000 miles ago due to something with the DEF system. I am very unfamiliar with diesel trucks in general and Chevy diesels especially. I have been doing research. It looks like there is a weak link with the CP-4.2 injection pump. A failure with it would likely be catastrophic and result in a 6500-8000 dollar mechanic bill. The LML engine appears very good all things considered. What say y’all?

Do you need a truck like that? It seems maybe not. That's fine, but if not I'd suggest not getting it. Higher maintenance costs. In my case, no convenient access to a trustworthy diesel mechanic. I have to call ahead and sometimes schedule a simple oil change. Yes, I could do it myself but I'm too busy doing nothing on THF.

I would pass. He waited too long to delete it. Some may argue that it doesn't matter or maybe even that it's a good thing. I'll side with 2Beez though. Get that $h!t off. It seems many have it done when their warranty runs out if they even wait that long. Mine was done at 65k miles due to a related issue.

Are you going to use it, at all?
Chevys do alright as commuter cars, but as actual work vehicles, they just don’t hold up.

Other than towing an 18.5’ cat boat, trailer with mule to the ranch or other things. That’s about it. I’ve had an F250 before but that was sometime ago. Been with tundra for a good long while. It can do the above just not as efficient as a diesel.
It would be my primary vehicle other than commuter car which is 4 cyl Camry.

2beez I’ve been reading about diesel deletes. It’s mainly been about pros, cons, HP, Torque, not having to put Def, engine breathing, performance. I haven’t ran across anything specific about mileage and/or waiting too long. Can you give me the just of waiting too long. Don’t know diesels enough to connect the dots.

Considering that, the Chevy ought to do just fine, so long as you don’t hold it to Tundra standards.

The main thing is the price. $20k for a 4x4 diesel 6.5 yes old and 165k miles everything I saw online was at least $32k. I figure If I have buyers remorse I could easily get my money back.

I voted yes, that should be a reliable pickup at a great price
I know two different people that have had a injector lump failure, both Rams and both covered under there car insurance.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

I’d be skeptical of deleting now and selling it. May just be me overthinking but that seems like a red flag to put that kind of money fixing the issue that should have been done several miles ago.

I voted no....I just dont like buying that many miles on anything. I am coming around to shopping used but it scares the he77 out of me unless its a CPO vehicle but they are priced like new.
Also, no matter how pristine a vehicle is. When you get right down to it. The only thing noticed are the miles on the motor..
tires new? shocks? brakes?

Correct, I sold 36 2019 model Chev. 3500’s last year that were used by well service crews. At 68,000 average miles, they were done. The suspension and front end was the worst part of them it looked like, and all the beds were cracked. And for the OP, I would look for something a little less used.
