Looks like I lost my 4 hawthorns in the deep freeze.

what should I replace them with? They are between a Texas Sage and Boxwoods.

Lorapetalum, Recurve Legustrum, or Eleagnus. Depends on what color you want. Lorapetalum can be had in a dwarf size that will fit in better with the smaller variety of Indian Hawthorns

Do what ever you like. I went plastic.

I will have caladiums across the front. They will give me full color until Thanksgiving. They are already peeing out of the ground. They are now little babies but they grow up fast.

How small are they? If over 2', give them a chance. All the hawthorns in Lubbock got hammered but I've checked several for 4-5 customers and IMO they're still alive, just taking a bit to come back out. They might need some trimming once you figure out which pieces are dead.

I’d vote no on the elaeangus.

Lorapetalum is too delicate for wise county. Gets moldy, needs iron....doesn’t like alkaline soil. Tried multiple times and gave up.
We have had good luck with sage and boxwood. Freeze didn’t even phase the boxwoods.

Thanks guys

I have a few live leaves coming out at the very bottom of the hawthorns, they were underground during the freeze and just now coming out. Think I'm going to have my guy just dig them out and start over

I would rather have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. You can take that to the bank. You have everything you need if you have a garden and a library. It will never rain roses. When we went to have more roses we must plant them. You need to get out and about more often. What did I win?

Good advice here - like everyone else around these parts who had them, my hawthorns were toast. I yanked them out this past weekend and still considering the replacements.

I predict a shortage in bushes in our area.

I would say half the house in my area have dead bushes

Several folks in my neighborhood are from the valley. 'Course, they landscaped to try and make it look like the valley. Dead palms everywhere.

We lost very little.

I think my 20 year old Crepe Myrtles are toast. The branches are brittle and don't have any green to them at all.
