WhooHoo me and my son drew Montana elk/deer tags for this fall. Were focusing on the units with large herd population (west of Yellowstone) Any GENERAL info is appreciated. Its Grizz country but we accept that. Wolves are a non factor unless they have decimated the area population. I hunted the Snowcrest range in 2017 and arrived to face a foot of snow sept. 10th. It pretty much ruined first half of my hunt but that was just bad luck that year. Were looking at the gravely/greenhorn ranges specifically and the range across the valley to the east, near Yellowstone.

Can't wait until September!

congrats on the draw. Love hunting Montana for elk and deer. I hunted the Big Belts and Little Belts not far from Fort Logan and had a blast.

Did you hear of the grizz attack on a hiker over there ? Better be prepared, bear spray and a handgun.

Bear spray but no gun. I remember all my early elk hunts and half the people were carrying guns on their hunts in black bear country. I thought then and think it now what a waste of energy. Its one of those things where your more likely to get killed driving out their than getting killed by a black bear/mountain lion. I get some are freaked out but I've never been one of those people. I know of some hunters who will not carry a gun unless their on Kodiak. I didn't carry spray or gun in 2017 on my last Montana elk hunt but the areas we are looking at this year spray for sure. If my son wants to carry a gun he can have at it lol

Unfortunately, the man who was mauled suffered a stroke, resulting from the damage and surgeries, and passed away. The bear in question was encountered again the next day by the biologists when investigating. Charged them (7 people) several time, and was shot and killed. They found an unseen, buried moose carcass that it was defending.

The area there at Baker's Hole, and Rainbow Point is basically right on the Park boundary, and gets a LOT of bears in the area. Archery hunting in the area is great, but you need to hunt smart, and be really careful about meat handling and going back for loads the next day. Definitely each have a can of bear spray with you. Maybe even an extra, in case you have to use one. The idea to have a firearm is not a bad one, but too often people get over-confident just because they have a pistol. Until you live here with them, and actually see them up close, you have no idea what they are capable of!!! These are all recent pics of bears in that area. We see more in the Spring usually, but they are more aggressive in late Fall.

thanks for sharing those pics

I am not afraid of dogs, wolves, mountain lion, snakes etc ...

but something about bear and their unpredictable nature

Grizz, not black bears are the issue. To be effective you have to carry with one in the pipe and at the ready.
For me, I just don't hunt in grizz country. Except for my bison and by my late hunts they are mostly hibernating. Even then, we were warned to be bear aware.
