Last week I was calling coyotes with some good friends in the Panhandle. We were hunting where the big fire consumed more than half a million acres, hundreds of head of cattle, hundreds of miles of fencing and three lives. This country was always open but after the fire in 2018, the landscape has changed.
While hunting vast rolling open terrain, I have spooked coyotes when walking in to make a call. The most times that I recall this happening in one day was twice when calling in New Mexico. Last week was a record setting day but not for a record that I wanted. Six times we walked in to make a call and ran coyotes off. It finally got to be a joke as the coyotes were piled into one pasture where cows were calving. In spite of our poor luck setting up, we called and killed a few coyotes and killed a couple more from the buggy.
Adios,
Gary

Coyotes go where the food is ---------- sounds like mother nature in action. I assume the rancher wanted you to come back next weekend.

I've killed far more coyotes hunting the way they do, opportunistic, than I have actively calling. Always keeping an eye out for them, and always having a scoped rifle and range finder beside me.

Maybe in the future, move more stealthy, and expect there to be coyotes over the next hill, or around the next corner. Hunting with a friend makes this even easier. One of you is running the laser and the other is on the rifle. Having the ability to hit far away increases your successful kills as well. That was the genesis of me getting into long range shooting, I wanted to be able to hit coyotes as far as I could see them.

I’m with Fireman. I’ve called some in, but it wasn’t as easy or quick as on the TV predator shows. Most of my success has been hunting over dead hogs or catching the coyotes moving across open ground. Just for the dept of odd info, the last coyote I called in came to the sounds of pigs fighting.

Lots of rabbits and mice on the regrowth. Tends to be a population explosion, predator swamping to the nth degree

Each to their own, but calling can be much, much more productive.

Once you learn how to call... By that I mean, when, where, and technique, you'd be calling them in just like on the TV predator shows. Only thing is, you won't be compressing 3-4 days hunting into 30 minutes. You can call in lots of coyotes. But probably not 5-6 in a half hour. It's got it's own rewards and perspective.

Sure looks that way, since he ran off a whole bunch of them.

I am not disputing any of that.

However, while traveling, either driving or more importantly walking, be hunting. Sneak in, use the wind, use the shade, be quiet, be on the lookout.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

No matter how long you've been hunting anything you always learn something going out in the field. The minute you think you know everything about anything is the minute your humbled!
That being said I wish I had a quarter of the knowledge and experience of Mr. Roberson about predator hunting.

I don’t allow anyone hunting my place to shoot a coyote. They are the only defense we have against hogs.
