Clearly it has been done for hundreds of years. I suspect forging followed by a whole lot of file work.

I just wonder if anyone here has tackled it.

This thread piqued my curiosity and I found information at both ends of the sophistication spectrum:
The primitive end.
The "I really know what I'm doing" end.

I have enough hard time putting a saw back on a knife spine, I can't imagine making a complete saw.. I guess that's how they did it back in the day.

I ask for curiosity sake. It has clearly been done for centuries. In the event of the store not being available, the internet not being available, and delivery not being available.

My thinking is a jig like a vise, with channels cut on both sides to maintain the proper angles for the file. Is that how you put a saw back on a knife spine?

I try not to do them bro, yes you certainly need a jig.

I actually have an antique jig for that somewhere. I bought it up in Kansas the best that I remember. I didn't buy it to use, I just thought it was neat.

I don't think Fred Flintstone had any of those items to work with
