What about all those millions of students that have paid off their debt ? What about the millions of students that will take out loans in the future ? Why bail out just the current debtors ? Where was it that the Billionaire paid off all the student loans of the graduating class when he gave the commencement address ? If I had attended that school, a year before or a year later,, I would have been pissed off big time. Sorta like attending the Opra show the day before or the day after she gave everyone a car.
MO Never understood why people get pissed off at other's good fortune. That debt was paid off by a person with their own money. That is way different than paying off other's debt with tax payer money.

They are not free when in high-school. They do not need the full amount of money on the first day.We didn't set aide money for Cathy. She had a National Merit Scholarship grant. I paid the tuition and my wife paid her expenses. We gave up our vacations while she was in college and law school.

I was lucky to graduate with no debt (Texas tomorrow fund and good scholarships).
Wife paid her own way and graduated with debt. We had it all paid off within 8 years of her graduation.
I think it's BS to offer loan forgiveness. Don't go to college and get a useless degree - that would resolve 80% of the student debt issue. I agree with what your saying with (1) catch. The price of an education is outpacing wages across the board. Take my world. Most engineers out of school without any assistance have about $120K-$130k (all in cost) at a tier 1 university. Average salary for that individual is $60k-$70k. So look at these numbers: for a single recent grad, which I would say is a fair snapshot Undergrad - $125k (principal) @ 4% yoy for 10 years is $1266/monthly Housing in major metro area (1br apt) - $1200 Utilities - $200 Food - $300 to $600 I’ll use $450 as median Gas - $200 WiFi - $50 to $100 I’ll use $75 as median Car insurance (liability from reputable company) - $75 Health insurance (assuming you work at a good company) - $125 10% in 401k/retirement - $542 Take home = $3656 Cost to live = $3591 Delta of +$65If you’re a teacher making $45k your in hole and screwed. I didn’t factor any entertainment or gym membership or extras like cable tv, hunting, fishing, etc. for the past 20 years higher education has averaged a 4% yoy increase in tuition costs.

I went to college without a car. Many still don’t. How about life after college when ya had to go to work. Hard to get around Houston without a car.

I had 27k, worked a FT job and a PT job for five years and every extra dime I had went to pay the loan. Was done in under 5 years despite a crappy rate and lousy FT salary. It can be done but the pathetic snowflakes don't know anything about hard work. They just want to squawk like baby birds and hold out their hands and the Dems want to buy their votes with taxpayer money.

A debt doesn’t go away. It’s still money owed. The only thing that would change is who pays back the debt, and that’s the taxpayers.

Personally I think this is horse hockey. But if this should pass, everybody that receives any of these benefits should have an "excise tax" added to their federal income tax for the rest of their lives. Using actuarial tables based on the debt and expected life span. This way they pay back the "benefit".

Excellent point, one thing that has been a major reason for quite a few people enlisting is the GI Bill. But the other point, resume the Draft, and it can fill in the missing numbers.

I love it. I voted for Biden for his great ideas and solutions for our country like this one. My 175k in student loans that came from my liberal arts degree with a PhD in gender equality in 3rd world countries deserves to be canceled.

I’m on both sides of the coin.....I had to pay off my student debt and received no credit/discount.
On the other hand student loans and the cost of a degree is outrageous and should fall under predatory lending practices.
Though I will not disagree with this. You borrowed so pay the man. Millions of blue/white collar workers will want a cut so where do we stop this nonsense?

We are at about the 6 trillion dollar mark in Covid relief bills. Money that is not in the treasury, this will be our great great great grand childrens future tax liability. So what is another trillion dollars here and another trillion dollars over there? It is only paper money ,it has no real value. A good education is an investment in the future. Let's pay it now, so our great great great grandchildren will be well invested.
