I have heard a couple times that axis arent big fans of high elevation, We are dead inbetween Rocksprings and Del Rio. Sitting at about 2100 feet.
Let me know if yall have anu insight.

I've seen a lot of axis at the highest point of our ranch. Not a lot of altitude change, but still.

Only thing I have seen is that they like the lower elevations where there are creeks or rivers. There is usually more of what they like to eat in those areas.

IME, axis will be in different areas of a ranch(es) at different time during the year. They had seasonal areas they moved to due to available cover, forage and water needs. We had axis in a HF pasture of about 400 acres with elevation from 1780 to 1920 in that pasture. We put the axis in that pasture so they had to live in it. Every year in July and August they could be found in the same area of the pasture along a spring fed creek. Same thing during different seasons in different areas of that pasture. They had free choice protein and spin feeders also. We rarely ever saw them at a spin feeder the first 5 yrs. They would hit protein feeders but it was a random occurrence and not every day. No routine or pattern to them. We also had a very large herd in a separate pasture, these were being farm raised for the venison market. It was fairly flat to rolling terrain with one creek bottom. Mainly open improved grass pasture. In both areas of the ranch the axis were mainly grazers and not browsers. The ones in the venison pasture would eat coastal or kleingrass. They would eat round bales of coastal and grazer hay we put out in winter months along with protein from timered trough style protein feeders. When it gets very dry they will move to better areas of feed(river or creek bottoms), irrigated fields or feeders. Water is key with any wildlife and then feed close water is very important.

My buddy has a place northwest out of Bracketteville and they have axis out there.

There are a bunch in that area you just need to have water

To echo what mulie said. Axis seem to gravitate to water it seems to me. My buddy’s place in campwood has a lot of elevation and we can always find them in river and creek bottom areas doesn’t make a difference time of year.

Axis deer drink water every day, so the presence of creeks and ponds heavily influence where they congregate. They also love mesquite flats, that's where we tend to see them most. 2K feet of elevation really won't make much of a difference.

to me it's more about the grass and browse ive noticed them alot in areas rich in topsoil which also tend to have water close by, since their so widespread thry end up up on top high ranges and stay up their if the browse is right, water close by and not alot of pressure

We have Axis on our 1,400 acre lease. Everything STX said is consistent with what we have observed. Depending on the time of year we will have 3 to 4 herds. They have no "home area" and move around the entire place, and the neighbors. You may see them everyday and then not see them for two weeks. Our place does not have extreme elevation changes but they spend just as much time on the high parts as they do the low parts.

As stated they are grazers. The majority of the year they couldn't care less about corn. The one exception seems to be Jan, Feb when there is simply not alot of green stuff in the pasture.
