Sure is a lot of talk about canceling student debt. I personally have over 20K in student debt and would like to pay it off but there is no way I am going to do that with all of the talk. What incentive do I have to pay it off just so they can forgive a large portion, if not all of it, in the near future? I have no problem paying my debts but I would be crazy to pay more right now.

"Warren convened the hearing to make the case for student-debt cancellation, a policy she’s been pushing since her presidential campaign. Ahead of the event, Warren released an analysis of Department of Education data requested by her office, which found that cancelling up to $50,000 in student debt would eliminate the loans for more than 36 million borrowers — 3 million of whom have been paying for 20 years or more.

During the hearing, Warren touted the data as ammunition for her case, which has many backers. Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat of New York and the majority leader, has joined Warren in urging President Biden up to cancel $50,000 in student loans.

Activists have been pushing for years for all student loans to be wiped away and over 400 advocacy groups, including those working on consumer, civil rights and other issues, released a letter Tuesday urging the president to cancel student debt. "

I paid my son's school upfront. Worked two jobs for 15 years, think I will get a refund?

I just shake my head. 3 kids and my own student debt down the drain. I petition that we get reimbursed.

What about all those millions of students that have paid off their debt ? What about the millions of students that will
take out loans in the future ? Why bail out just the current debtors ?
Where was it that the Billionaire paid off all the student loans of the graduating class when he gave the
commencement address ? If I had attended that school, a year before or a year later,, I would have
been pissed off big time. Sorta like attending the Opra show the day before or the day after
she gave everyone a car.

I’m on both sides of the coin.....I had to pay off my student debt and received no credit/discount.

On the other hand student loans and the cost of a degree is outrageous and should fall under predatory lending practices.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If you could still discharge your student loan in bankruptcy it would still be affordable................guess who did that?

Hades NO to loan forgiveness. Just make it dischargeable again in bankruptcy. And get the govt out of the student loan bidness.

I was lucky to graduate with no debt (Texas tomorrow fund and good scholarships).

Wife paid her own way and graduated with debt. We had it all paid off within 8 years of her graduation.

I think it's BS to offer loan forgiveness. Don't go to college and get a useless degree - that would resolve 80% of the student debt issue.

The problem I have with this is that they want to cancel student loans indiscriminately. I would be ok with it for people getting degrees in fields where we (as a country) have a great need. They already do this for some teachers. If someone wasted 4 years for a degree in women’s studies or underwater basket weaving, I don’t want my taxpayer money wasted on that. Of course if women’s studies degrees were in high demand, by all means, let the government help with that. But why should we as taxpayers pay for someone to go from student to unemployed?

no to paying off the debt. Yes to making the loans 0% interest or charging the current inter-banking interest rate (which is basically 0%). Those 0% loans should be available to kids going to technical schools as well as colleges.

Thanks,
Rich

Teach people they can obligate themselves to something without actually obligating themselves to anything.

I completely disagree with making any loans available to kids. Part of the reason tuition is high is because the money is easy to get. (Well, if you are in the right demographic or income brackets...)

My point is... The easier the money is to get, the easier it is to pay for the schools to charge higher tuition rates.

I had 29k in student loans and paid back every penny. It’s what I said I would do.

Pay to Play.
If you borrowed it, i should be paid back. It's absolutely ridiculous that it's even being considered.
What's next- forgive car loans?
Payday loans? They're probably the most predatory type of loans out there.
H e double toothpicks no.

IF the student loan debt is erased up to 50K, guess what every university is going to do to their tuition come next semester....I will give you three choices but the first two don't count.

Talk about a bloat to an already overbloated college system that is beyond silly in price.

Think of it this way, if the govt was talking about removing car debt up to 50K per person, what do you think the car industry would do? It makes no sense to think the universities, which have slowly but suredly switched their premise of college from a good education to a good experience, would then keep prices the same or lower prices. It is a free govt grant for the university system at large. And we the tax payer are on the hook for it. What a brilliant idea by the ex-harvard liar.

Loans are oppressive. Oppression is racism. Racism is bad.....

btw, that is a joke, but I would not deny that line of reasoning would happen somewhere soon

For those that haven't looked at this before, if you throw average student loan debt into Google, the numbers you get back for 2019/2020 are between 29K and 34K. The politicians and media love to trot out the 200K in debt Starbucks barista or poor single mom who is struggling to pay off that 150K college loan. However, those are the exceptions and not the general rule.

But like others have said, if you give everyone 50K to pay off old loans or to cover new loans, you guarantee the cost of college will go up 50K in the next couple of years to absorb that new money.

Thanks,
Rich

Where is the money coming from to pay the loans off? or are they federally held loans and they are just going to "forgive" them?
