A Burleson police officer is hospitalized after he was shot multiple times during a traffic stop early Wednesday, prompting a manhunt for the suspects, police say.

In a Twitter post, The Burleson Police Department said the officer made a traffic stop at 4:15 a.m. along the 1100 block of Southwest Hillside Drive, near the Burleson High School Campus.

At some point during the stop one of the two people inside the car opened fire, striking the officer multiple times, Burleson Police Chief Billy Cordell said.

The two suspects, described by Cordell as a man and a woman, abandoned their vehicle a short distance away from the scene of the shooting and set it on fire.

The officer was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for treatment. He was "lucid and speaking" when he was being transported to the hospital, Cordell said. Further details on his condition are unknown, police said.

The wounded officer's name has not been released as of this writing.

Burleson police are using body camera footage to try to identify the suspects as quickly as possible, Cordell said.

A Fort Worth police helicopter was assisting in the search.

The wounded officer has served on the midnight shift for several years, Cordell said, adding that the incident comes as a shock to the department.

"This is a surprise. Burleson's a great, great community of people. This is certainly not anything we would expect to see, but it's always a possibility."

"This will be difficult on the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," he added.

The Texas Rangers will take over the investigation.

He’s supposed to be stable. My buddy was out helping search. They didn’t pick up a track so they believe the suspects were picked up by someone where they abandoned the vehicle.
