Well in this case NOT.

I was going to check some game cameras this afternoon and driving down the service road I saw this guy just laying near the edge of the road.

I drove on past and didn't disturb him. On my way back it was STILL there, I guess just soaking up the heat of the gravel road. But this put him very much in danger if a tanker truck were to come to the well site.

I stopped and picked it up, admired it for a minute and placed him/her off in the grass. It was happy to crawl away then. (Juvenile Texas Rat Snake).

Usually when I see them they are on the move. Especially this time of year since it is the beginning of the mating season for them.

We have pockets of Timber/Canebrake and Pygmy Rattlers in my County (Deep East Texas) but in the 35+ years I've roamed the woods here, I have never encountered one.

I grew up in Central Texas and hunted there and South Texas where the Western Diamondback is abundant.

As for nonvenomous snakes....I've seen many different types here in East Texas and quite a few on my own property.

Last Thursday, the 8th, I was cutting the grass on our place near Ratcliff in East Texas when right against the foundation of the house I saw a long black rat snake. I jumped off the mower to grab him but he saw me and took off before I could grab him or get a picture.

The boy and I saw a big one Monday evening while going to make a circle around our place. He was headed up a mesquite tree.
Then saw a coachwhip that was easily 5.5' as well.
Of course the bad news we were making a circle because I'd killed a 4' rattlesnake about 30 minutes earlier.....our 1st of the year after killing 20 last year.

Our problem out here in the desert is you might go two or three years without even seeing one rattlesnake all summer. You get complacent, and stop watching and using good sense. Then you make a goof!!

Due to having TOO many hogs, I very rarely, maybe once every Year, see a snake of any kind.

I am as far East in Bexar County as you can get.
Just outside of St. Hedwig.

We killed 20 on the nose last year and either 10 or 11 the year before. The previous 8 years maybe 10 altogether!

They sold 225-250 acre place that borders me on 2 sides and started splitting it into 11-20 acre tracks. We started having a problem with them very shortly after they started clearing property lines on it.
That place was heavy brush and had not had any stock on it in several years and my guess is that it was infested with them.

I found one this AM, but he isn't moving anymore. Can't have a Coral snake around with a small dog and grandkids playing in the yard.

I agree Michael W.

Glad you got him before he got one of your grandkids or the pup.
