After the big freeze, a good number of our biggest and oldest trees (oaks and others) started budding out and then apparently gave up and died. And mesquites around here aren’t looking too good either, being maybe dead or not having the energy to put on leaves.
And the trees that are putting on leaves don’t look like they have their heart in it.

My oaks are dark green and my pecan trees are now putting on tassels.

I see everyone’s live oaks taking a while to show life in the neighborhood. Mine looks dead but I’m confidant. It’s an oak! Not my stinkin’ $300 wax leaf ligustrum that couldn’t hack it.

Give them another month or two. Don't get the chainsaw out just yet.

Give them another month or two. Don't get the chainsaw out just yet. Bingo. I started a bond fire yesterday with my deal limbs and stalks. There was a little green at the bottom of all of the. I like to see them short because it gives my caladiums a better show. I saw a little bitty one breaking the crust yesterday. "Give be lemons and I will give you lemonade. Give me dead stalks and I will give you beautiful White Queen caladiums." That is an old saying of mine. I have lots and lots of old sayings. You can take it to the bank. Up part right corner.

My Live Oak in front yard and Red Oak on the east side look great, the Red Oak in the back yard has good full leaf foliage on the bottom half and only leaf buds on the top half, it is weird looking.

The bigger mesquites always seem to wait the longest. Older and wiser..
We planted 7 fruit trees before the freeze and all made it but the fig.
Our older peach tree had everything die back to the main branches. I cut all the dead and it seems to be doing well.
Lost several crape myrtles
All of the oak and pecan seem to be doing great.

And the trees that are putting on leaves don’t look like they have their heart in it. I saw a post from Neil Sperry that said not to worry at this point. May take some time but most hardwoods should bounce back alright in due time. Several of our white oaks did the same thing - but now are slowly budding out again limb by limb. Some are budding out only at the top most limbs - some at the lowest...some have full leaves from top to bottom already...sounds like given the crazy weather it's not a cause for concern at this point.

My live oak in the front has green on the south side and still holding brown on the north and west side. Looks funky for sure, but I think it will be just fine

My 2 trees in the front which I have been trimming so they look like the belong on the Africa Savanah have yet to bud.
Starting to get concerned but will give them until June and see what they do
Half my bushes are cut down almost to the root in hope they will come back, they are not looking good.
The Freeze was hard on my stuff

I lost some mesquite trees which I was glad to lose. Was able to push some over with my tractor. Looks like I might be losing 2 orange trees and one tangerine tree

100% of my live oaks have budded back out - my post& burr oaks are all coming along nicely too. Pecans are just now budding out, and half of native persimmons are just now budding out. Native redbuds all around property have already blossomed and are leaving out now. Mesquites out back still dormant, or dead (which I'd be glad if they died.) Fruit trees look to be 100% - peaches, pears, and sand plums - All have fruit set already. 2 fig 'bushes' ; branches died back to ground as with all hard freezes, but new leafs/branches already sprouted from base - we got to -3 degrees here.
Most all of our landscape shrubbery has bounced back fine as well, surprisingly; sages, vitex, w.l. Ligustrum, salvia, dwarf holly, variegated privets, red yucca, lantana, & more. still waiting on established crape myrtles to 'wake up', but all of our recently planted ones are budding now tip to toe. Have several large rosemary plants we thought lost, but they're springing back nicely. Our front lawn actually stayed partially green under the snow, and is now the greenest/thickest it's ever been. Gotta love that 'Dyno-dirt' - that stuff is magic for landscaping & lawn.
I had a couple rows of fall turnips in the garden that 'died' back to the bulbs, but put out all new greens and are now flowering/seeding (though the bulbs are now 'mush'/inedible).

I have an old Ash tree in the front yard that is not happy. It has started to bud before the freeze and now only like 5% of the branches have any green. There are quite a few Ash trees around the neighborhood and a lot of them don't have a spec of green on them, and none of them are looking good. Mine was on its last legs anyway, so if it doesn't bounce back, it'll be gone. My apple tree came on like nothing happened, same with my crepe myrtles.

My live oak is lucky the Stihl is out of mix and I am not extremely motivated to fuel her up. I think the old oak is now a dead one; if it is going to green up, it is on borrowed time.
