I caught one in La Porte a few years ago. it was 6'4" long.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Wow that's a whopper of a beast! Makes me wonder what would happen if I dropped some salt in my crappie hole...

See them all the time from my poling platform when sight casting reds. Put a bowfishing rig in the hatch for entertainment when the reds aren't biting.

Lots of good fishing contraptions to hang them including piano wire snare and frayed nylon rope to tangle in them teeth. Had a buddy that fished them through HS and after for spending money as he sold them on the west side of Port Arthur. Gar balls were the end product of the buyers. His general fishing area was up the Neches about 2 miles from the mouth where it emptied into Sabine Lake in the outfall canal from the power plant.
Multiple rods, cut mullet, clickers on the reels. Wire leaders and treble hooks. Gotta let 'em take it all the way down.

We were soaking some cut mullet for redfish a few years ago in rockport. My brother hooked up and we thought he had a real nice red for a bit. We got it to the boat and it turned out to be a 20-30 pound gator gar. We let him go. They are cool fish.
It's hell eatin em live
