They didn't even mention replacing points and plugs with the tune-up so I'm out too...

Looks as if we are all on the same page until an AC man comes along selling snake oil.

"Snake oil is an expression that originally referred to fraudulent health products or unproven medicine but has come to refer to any product with questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit."

Read your definition of snake oil - it's perfectly on topic...

I have a contract for twice yearly checks. Received extra warranty years for buying it when I had the new unit installed. Has already paid off when the thermostat went south. Plus I have priority for appointments in bad times. Peace of mind.

For $65. i'm sure they could find or break something that would cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars.Nope,I think i'll pass and if i'm not cooling i'll call my grandson.

Big pass.

If you turn it on and it doesnt cool then call the man.

Change your filter, spray off the outside unit and flush the drip line. Mostly if you just change your filter you will be fine. I hear advertisements for "tune ups" and "resetting to factory settings" all the time. To me those advertisements are BS enough that I would never call them for service even if I had an issue.

One other helpful tip for folks: open the panel on the back of your unit outside, take a picture of the capacitor label, and buy an extra one or two online. These are $30 online and probably 80% of why AC units go down. A service call will cost you $250 plus the delay in them getting there. It's a simple spade to spade hookup that will keep you cooling and save you money.

Do it for each unit, mine don't use the same capacitors

while you have the back panel off, put some seven dust or other ant poison on the bottom of the control panel. That will save your compressor contactor from fire ants.

Nailed it. They also get into my transformer for my underground power. They don't alway make a mound outside. Just a little hole. You can see it on the lower right corner.

If you have issues with your AC, you know it. Either there’s a sound that ain’t normal or it just doesn’t seem to be all there. Either way, they either work or they don’t. The past history will tell you 99% of the time what the issue is now.

This is really good advice if you know a little bit about electrical stuff.

It all depends on what the tech does, if he cleans the coils inside and out, clears the drain line. It could save yousome cash in the long run. Especially if your drain cloggs and the moron who did the original install put the vent "T" outside the emergency drain pan. bang
This won't happen for $65 though

I see posts on social media quite often from people who have a clogged drain line from their evaporator unit. At first they think they have a roof leak after seeing a water spot on the ceiling. I went so far as to install short, vertical riser pipes on the drains to both of my units to make it easier to flush them once a year with a little bleach and about a gallon of water. Sometimes folks are smart enough to know that water coming from the secondary plan drain pipe under the eaves means the primary pan is leaking into the secondary pan. However, quite often the primary pan overflows in such a way it misses the secondary pan and drops to the ceiling below.

And let's not forget the vast majority of lawn workers have no clue as to how often they're getting grass clippings into the coils of outside condensing units. Just another reason why I mow my own yard.
