Now that I have jinxed myself. My Lennox is 10.5 years old, still going strong. I keep thermostat on 67* all summer. My friends Trane went out last week. $12,000 for a 20 seer new one.
What brand does everyone like. Residential unit.?
I know Trane, Lennox, what others are good?

Make friends with a good HVAC tech: You can order a complete system for around $3000(+/-) from IWAE.com and have delivered to your door free and pay your tech buddy $1000cash to install it (in the off-season), helping him with the 'heavy lifting'.

Our train unit is going on 29 years old now, have to add 1/2 to a pound of Freon every year. Owner of company that put in, ( he installed it himself) said keep it going as long as we can, they don’t make them to last more than five years any more....

Currently they have all had quality issues and most of the residential units have ecm’s blowers that are expensive. Also all parts have been hard to come by. So if you have a Trane and have been happy with it go back with Trane. The most important thing is making that it has high and low pressure switches and that the install is done properly. You do not need a 20 Seer unit you will not out live the unit and get your money back. So stay with a 16 to maybe a 18 seer unit.

Lennox has their headquarters in Richardson.
Amana and Goodman are built in Houston.
There is another brand built in Tyler I think as well.
I choose Lennox to replace my r22 Trane and went through Costco for the best price.

Good luck when it comes time for warranty issues If you can really buy a quality name brand system for that then your at 1/2 price, you can afford to pay some repairs. Even if it breaks under "warranty" you still have to pay labor if it takes longer than a year in almost all cases.

We've got Amana/Goodman units on our house(3T and 4T). The 3T condenser failed last year right after it went outside of the 10 year warranty. The A/C company replaced it with another 3T unit that I swear is every bit as large as the 4T unit sitting next to it.
I also have an insurance policy on my electronics/appliances through UPC insurance (it's not like the home warranty policies, it's actual insurance). I knew my A/C's were about to go out of warranty, so I picked it up last year when I renewed my HO insurance. Turned out to be the best $44 I ever spent. It covered the condenser replacement and all I had to pay was the $500 deductible and the cost of the new extended warranty. If you get something like this and want to make a claim, just make sure your technician forgets the phrase "normal wear and tear" ever existed. Sudden cracking/splitting = 100% covered. Normal wear and tear = 0 coverage.

I choose Lennox to replace my r22 Trane and went through Costco for the best price. I had a Goodman that the factory weld came apart on the condenser unit outside, it was still under warranty which I think it only lasted 5 years, I canned that and got a Payne Unit for outside and replaced the inside as well with a Payne, See how long it will last. I got 10 year warranty on the condenser.

If I had a nickel for every time the Christian name referenced in the OP's title made me want to post something...and didn't, I'd be a very wealthy man. Today's word is " inane ".

They all make builder grade and highly efficient stuff. Having said that, Trane’s coils are a PIA to keep clean vs the fin style but they dissipate heat like nobody’s business. With all the ecm controlled motors they’re doing now too,(versus psc) they’re pretty sweet set ups. And quiet as heck.

Good luck when it comes time for warranty issues Most MFGR will warranty the compressor for 10 years as long as you the end-user complete/submit the warranty registration. I can easily obtain/replace small parts like caps, contactors, control boards, blower motors; ie- regular maintenance items, for pennies on the dollar compared to retail service. True, not everybody can do electrical or technical - that's why you need a tech buddy if you can't.
