I got a model 99 in 300 savage from my grandfather when I was 10. I'm 71 now. The gun was manufactured in 1927. It had not been shot in
over 60 years and just stayed in the back of my closet. I could not find any ammo for it and so I put a request to buy some here on THF. Two different
people gave me a box. There are such great people on this forum. I took it out Easter Sunday afternoon and shot it for the first time. 1", 3 shot group at 65 yards, one inch high.
That's the distance to my feeder. A grandson of a friend of mine was out there and I said lets go hog hunting. We sat on the ground with our backs
to some pine trees. I gave him the gun to use and at 4:30 about 10 hogs came in. He shot two of them with the lever action savage.
I could not have been happier for him and for how my grandfathers rifle still shoots.

That's just cool. I bet he was proud as a peacock to have had the opportunity to shoot a rifle like that with the background that it has!

Most of those older rifles still remember how...we're the ones that have forgotten!

Congratulations on putting it back into service!

Great story.

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Great read! The 99 is possibly the greatest lever rifle of all time. My favorite calibers in it were the .300 Savage and .250-3000...
Adios,
Gary

We went to my grandfathers house one Thanksgiving. He was not there and I asked if he would
be back in time for dinner. My grandmother said, "When is deer season over?" I replied in early
January. She said, "He will be back in early January."
So, yes, I bet there was some great stories involving that old rifle.

I like to see those old guns being used. I too have a Savage 99 also made in 1927. It's a takedown model. Had it since the mid to late 50's. I still shoot it when I can find the 300 Savage cartridges for it.
