What is it about the The Winchester Book by George Madis that makes sellers demand such high prices? Does it contain a lot of information that you can't find in other books, or is it just something that's become very collectable? If you're not into collecting, are there other books that offer just as much information that cost less?

TIA

It’s both the factors you state. No serious Winchester collector would be without it. There is only a limited number of copies, so there you have it. Basic supply and demand.

There are other good books but Madis is probably the most comprehensive. And, since every book has different information, you need at least the best ones to have a more compete reference library.

Yessir, but I am not an expert. I know just enough to be dangerous. smile Thankfully I have some friends who are and they help me. I have done a fair amount of reading on Winchester lever actions, pre-64 Model 70s and antique Colt single actions.
As you know, however, there are some people who are walking encyclopedias on old guns.

I guess you would say I have a casual interest in pre64 M70s. I may buy a few over the next few years but im in no hurry. I know a couple guys that I have been told own about as many as anyone. One outa DFW is a wealth of info and I can easily call and he will talk all day about them.

They are fun to collect and learn about. Pre-64 70s were the first thing I collected. Then I got the lever action bug.

Not a collector but bought a mod 73 in38-40 about 40 or more years ago. Also, my pre 64 30 30 is my favorite up close gun.

Lately I’ve been seeing going for anywhere from $100 up to $350-400 depending on the edition and book condition. Just a regular edition in decent shape will set you back about $150.

I think that working the lever on a post-War pre ‘64 Model 94 is the most satisfying mechanical action that exists across the spectrum of firearms. Some full-auto machine gun enthusiasts will debate the point. smile

Dang I have several of them and most signed by George.
I had a pretty cool rarer model 94 he looked at for me back in the 90s.

Compared to “the books” for Walther collectors and Luger collectors, the Madis book is fairly inexpensive.
