Obviously, there are no right or wrong answers here. As they say, to each his own. Personally, I'm just not attracted to an area where the distance between the nearest towns is measured by hours rather than minutes.

Not sure but maybe my feelings are rooted in living as a kid on Glasgow AFB in Montana, a town that has since been given the official title of being "the middle of nowhere."

I agree with most here and think South and west Tx is a much more beautiful place than a bunch of think pine trees any day of the week.

I disagree.

Referring to a hatred for deer is a tongue-in-cheek way of seeing a lesser need to endure a given challenge in hunting them. For example, staying close to the fire on a 20-degree morning might be the result of not hating them as much as before.

That would assume that all people live in east texas and drive to hunt west/south etc.

I have hunted North, South, East, and West Texas, and West Texas is by far my favorite.

I currently live in an area that 1000 people a day are moving to. I love the desolation and solitude of West Texas, especially out around Big Bend/Fort Davis.

West Texas mountain country Hands down.

A lot more people think so too....lease prices reflect that

Pine trees and lots of surface water is way overrated.

I’ll keep my long distance views, scrubby vegetation and a deer to 5 acres.....

I quit deer hunting and took up duck hunting when I moved to East Tx. I also fished at least 300 days a year. Living on lake Palestine was great. The only thing I miss about East Tx is the fishing, but I’ll take Amistad over Toledo Bend or Rayburn any day. The lake is the only place the pine trees don’t close in on you.

I like the tall east texas pines, nothing like 'em.
Same goes for the mountains. God made them both equally good to look at.

Don't get me wrong, I would definitely enjoy hunting the vastness of West Texas if I lived close by. However, I get two extra days of hunting in East Texas in the time it would take me to make the drive to and from West Texas. Still, I have no doubts there are many who live in the Houston area who make those long drives every season.

I would be sooooo claustrophobic in a set up like that. Hate it. First thing I would be wanting to cut about six senderos.
I can handle big trees(especially oaks) if there are openings are right of ways. Like was said in the “top or bottom”thread—whichever I can see the most country. To each his own for sure.
Maybe a poll about which set up is preferred.

I've heard guys talking about driving all night just to hunt the next day. Not sure I'll ever hate deer that much.

I love hunting deer anywhere I get the opportunity. Whether it’s along the Platte in the river bottoms or a 2 or 3 hour drive up to the sandhill canyons. As far as hating them goes, I find that the older I get the less I hate them. Last years season ended with 4 does right under my stand at about 40 yards. I said to myself “those does have survived two doe only seasons, archery season and rifle season. They deserve the right to live another year.” Said bang! And got down and called it good. See them again next year.

Amazing diversity of fauna in rugged country where you'd think you can't hide, but where they can disappear.

I am being honest

I don't think it's even close.
And if you think West TX is miles of nothing and flat land it's pretty obvious to me that you've spent little to no time there at all.

I'd rather stand on top a ridge and see for 50 miles than stand in a clear-cut of timber and see only as far as allowed by the clear cutting.

But, I'm glad some folks like it better in the area you like because then maybe my future grandchildren will have a little of the unbroken west to enjoy when they are my age.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Not my cup of tea at all.

If that makes you claustrophobic, this must make you catatonic. roflmao I love the thick woods and the way it allows me to be up close with the animals. This little spot is a slice of heaven for me, with a year round creek running through it and huge white oaks dropping acorns.

You'd need an extra week of hunting to see the amount of deer I see in just one hunt in West Texas
